             Yep, The F-104 Starfighter WAS widely used. Powered by a J79 Engine, basically  the engine used in the F4 and B58 as well. The entire plane wasn't much bigger than the engine. Talk about power to weight ratio.

When I was little My brother in law took me to the air force base where he was stationed. I remember the F104's taking off and going almost straight up as soon as they were airborne.

I was a kid growing up in Wichita KS.  Dad worked at Boeing, as an engineer. The things used to roar over, but maybe they were F-105's by the time I heard sonic booms, maybe McConnell AFB sounds familiar.
