Brake caliper ID help?
« on: December 24, 2011, 01:38:05 PM »
Just got a 74 CB750 last week. As I understand this bike should have a single front brake. My bike came with dual front brakes. Problem is they are dragging badly which I understand is a common problem. I want to order up the pasts to rebuild the calipers but I need an ID on the parts since they may or may not be from the same year as the bike. I am including pics of both calipers, the banjo bolt union and the master cylinder. The info I need is what year and model the calipers are from, if the banjo setup on the bike is correct/functional and if the master cylinder is correct for the setup. Thanks much for the help. First of many questions Im sure.

From memory all the pistons and seals from 70 to the K7 were the same, there is no "correct" way for the banjo(s) as iit eas never twin disk--just so it works is good, the master will work but will be "spongy" with a long travel--if you can get a goldwing one it will be better

fixed mine by removing both pads and cleaning all the gunk out from behind them. this was keeping the one on  the pistion side from retracting enough. cleaned up the discs, set the spacing on the dead pad per the book and used a 99 cent pack of disc brake "lube" on the back of the pads. no squeal,no drag. give this a try.

Im taking mine all the way apart to have them powdercoated so I'll need new seals and whatnot. From looking at them, it seems that the calipers can be mounted on either side if you just switch the feed line with the bleeder correct? What is a good source for the goldwing master or could I use one from a later model sportbike like a CBR or something? I'm looking for the best performance from the parts I replace and I dont mind if it looks a little more modern. Thanks for the help!

Take the calipers apart and clean/inspect before ordering any parts. In most cases, a thorough cleaning is all that's needed to fix dragging brakes. Worst case is severely rusted pistons.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
