Brake side foot controls. Welded 1/2" rod to the frame, then fabbed the pedal out of 3/8" and 1/4" plate. Cut the grippies with a Zip disk. Then notched it and welded a bracket for the cable. Zip tied the brake light switch.
That's about that.
The pedal return springs are at the back where the cable mounts to the brake drum. Pretty simple I think, and works well. This thing is 2 air filters and good tyres away from being road ready!

Anyone have any reccomendations on tire sizes for dual 18" rims? There both 2.5 inches I think. Maybe 2.75.

Has anyone ever done this, and in their opinion improved handling?
Or weight?
Or know what kind of shock to use?

More than a few members have installed a monoshock suspension, along with an updated swingarm of one variety or another.  An aluminum box style swingarm combined with a monoshock should save you a considerable chunk of weight.  A boxed or braced swingarm will also improve handling.  Getting the geometry right so you can achieve the goal of improved handling is way beyond me.

Have you seen anybody get close? I'm very interested in this, monoshocking  a 500 just might be my next project. But I'm not interested in doing it for looks, I'd like to see an improvement in handling.

Yes, i'll have to go digging  but they were 500-550's, they don't have an oil tank so fitting a monoshock onto a swingarm brace like the old 1970's TZ Yamaha's works well, it can be done with no change to the wheelbase at all....  I am a 750 guy but i think forum member Godfrey has a nice example...
