550 Throttle Return Spring
« on: December 23, 2011, 05:13:50 PM »
I've read a lot on here about the weight of the return spring but have always been hesitant to replace it with a lighter unit. I reckon Mr Honda had a reason to make it that way & who am I to know better.
Anyway, being tired of my right hand going to sleep hangin' on to that big spring I finally bought an imitation crampbuster gadget to slip onto the throttle grip. I haven't acutually riden the bike with it on, but man oh man, doesn't it feel great!
I also got a new pair of gloves, my old ones were getting a bit tight & were probably compounding the problem.
Can't wait for my next ride to finally be able to relax a bit without slowing down. Best Christmas present I've had for a while.  ;)

That should really help, Frosty. I've used a throttle boss on my GW for years, and it's a great alternative. Gives you about a dozen hand positions to spare the cramping.

frosty you can replace the springs on the 550 thats right I said springs there are supposed to be 2 of them when you do replace them with about half the poundage of pull the originals had they will work fine but there still needs to be two in case one breaks as you have probably guessed taking one off does the same thing but is not safe
when you own a motorcycle the wife does not have to find you handy she just has to find you

the type one carbs have one heavy spring only,so if it breaks the return cable will return the throttles,,thats why running one pull cable only can be dangerous,i just used a lighter spring that still snaps back ok.

Dave, where/what did you get your spring? Was it a generic spring from a home improvement store, or from a different bike?

i have a few springs from all sorts of things, any decent bolt/engineering type shop should have a good selection, make a coat hanger type hook to fiddle down and un hook yours and take it down to compare.
