How much play should the front sprocket have?
« on: December 26, 2011, 04:35:13 AM »
I have a '76 CB550 engine on the stand and the front sprocket has some play on the output shaft. I guess you'd call it lateral or side to side play, almost like a washer or spacer is missing, but everything is there.
Is it supposed to fit tight or is a little movement OK?

They are designed to allow movement. The two 6mm bolts attach the retainer to the sprocket and the retainer"locates" in the groove on the countershaft. This is a good thing as it helps keep sprockets aligned.

Count yourself lucky to have some play in it.  One of mine welded itself up tight to the shaft and I ended up having to take a cutoff wheel and chop the sprocket off the shaft in pieces.
