Lets see 34 years of working and they don't look dependable :o :o.Do you have one of those combo units that are 34 years old? :)

theres a few threads on this theme, you can use the old rectifier and a later solid state regulator,or a new type rectifier with the old regulator, you can use a combo unit available from almost anywhere, the old rectifiers will be getting on by now and the modern ones are better particularly if you run an electronic ignition and the dc has to be more pure, david silvers has these, you can use most rec/reg combos from later bikes so long as the donor bike has an electro field and not a permanent magnetic field.

combo units wont be 34 years old yet bollingball, heaps are about 25 and still going strong, ive seen a few dud original ones though for what ever reasons, left in the weather, wrong connection etc,,old age?

some generators have either,,mostly all automobile ones have the electro magnetic field type, with this type if you reduce the voltage to that electromagnetic field youll reduce its charging output by weakening that field, and so its output, this is what our sohc ones do,with the permanent maget type it all works the same untill the voltage gets higher than you need,,this is where this regulator more or less dumps the excess back to earth, the regulators cant be swapped between these two types,,although the rectifier component can be,,the rectifier turns alternating current into direct current=ac/dc

That is interesting.  My father-in-law is an electrician and my brother was an electronics major and I have tried through the years to soak some of that in.  Still seams like magic to me.

electricians and electronics guys mostly dont understand auto charging systems,,they only work with electricity already made for them so dont get taught this stuff, they dont need to know it,,but think they do,my sister inlaws partner is a good electrician but cant even set up a tv and dvd set up!

With respect Dave DC =DC =DC.. no 'purity' issues with the stock rectifiers. The statement that electronic ignition requires solid state regulation is, according to posts on ign. threads, correct. Seems like some ( lots? ) of Dyna's were failing due to 'heat' on a long ride, when actually now IMO, the culprit is too high a charging voltage. The charging voltage will rise as the bike is run longer distances and the barttery 'fills' to where it's charging load is reduced allowing the charge voltage to rise above a safe level for the Dyna. The OEM regulator may not reduce the charging voltage 'in time' to avoid risk to the electronics. Stock system of course is immune to that. Solid state will 'clamp' the charging voltage and vary the charging wattage.... a different system... more electronic ign. friendly.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

alternators can output a tiny ac ,it upsets modern cars electronics, the battery will be pure dc.
