New member needs help with 750A front brake and oil leak
« on: December 26, 2011, 09:32:53 AM »
I have taken on the task of helping a friend fix his '77 Honda 750A (Hondamatic).  The front brake caliper has seized and needs to be rebuild.  Can anyone suggest a source for a rebuild kit?

Also, the engine has a significant oil leak at the left front by the head gasket.  Will re-torquing the head fix this or does the head gasket need to be replaced?  If re-torquing works, where can I get a valve cover gasket.

Thanks for helping this newbie.

About the front brake... is the brake seized 'on' to where you cant push the bike forward or seized to where there is no front brake action ??
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

I've disassembled the front brake caliper and the pad and piston are frozen in the cylinder.  I've got it soaking in penetrating oil now.  I've tried prying out the pad and blowing out the piston with 150lbs of compressed air, but neither worked.

Any suggestions?

Yep!......... the 'ol grease gun method is sure to work if all else has failed .
Got a grease gun ?..... unscrew the fitting from the end of the gun which will leave you with a male threaded end on the 'tube'. Now screw this male thread into the brake line opening just 1 or 2 turns ( your putting an imperial thread into a metric thread ) enough for the grease gun tube to grip the thread.
4 or 5 strokes of the grease into the caliper will force the piston out gently.... works great ! make sure the bleeder is in place and closed before trying.... good luck

Well the caliper is apart.  Heating it up in a pot of boiling water and then using Spanner's trick of threading a grease gun into the intake port and pumping grease into the cylinder worked.  Once apart, the caliper body and piston cleaned up nicely and now work.

Thanks for the help.

Great !... I just passed-on that trick I got from MC Rider, who I'm sure got it from someone else. That's the great thing about this forum  :) 8)
