hi to all, thanks for your help w/my prior transmission diagnosis--although it is worse than i had originally hoped/expected.
after disassembling my 78 cb750k motor to investigate the transmission noises, i found that i had broken 2 teeth off 2nd gear on the countershaft and damaged its mating gear as well. i purchased a good used gear set on ebay--supposably for a 78, and after reassembling the transmission i have run into another issue. while the transmission is in neutral and the gears are spun, the "shoulder" on the center shift fork makes contact with 2nd gear, producing the sound which i had heard prior to disassembly. the shift fork looks straight, but both it and the spare one i purchased have the conflict. is there something on the countershaft between the 2nd and 3rd gear which makes the fork more vertical, thus eliminating my conflict or does it actually sit "vertical" while straddling a slider in the completed engine? all of the pictures in the clymer manual (except the diagram on page 110) as well as mark's book, show it laying down. also, if it does sit vertical, how do i put the cases back together and have the fork mate up with the mainshaft without being able to see if it is properly aligned?
thanks again for any input,
jerry t.
p.s. i have a video of it spinning and conflicting, but the above notes pretty much say it all.
