Just awesome
« on: December 27, 2011, 12:54:11 PM »
Well, my apartment garage was broken into sometime last night. The theives entered through my neighbors garage (which he leaves open all the time), busting through the one sheet of drywall, and opening my garage from the inside.

The f*ckers stole ALL of my tools. The tool chest, hand tools, the specialy motorcycle tools I collected over the years, coordles power tools, the buffer, dremels, and more than I can remember.

Also stole my 70k kerosene heater, my motorcycle helmets, and jacket. Thank GOD they didn't take the V-Strom either because it was too big or due to the seat off with some wires exposed, they thought it was more trouble.

It seems like so much more but I just can't seem to remember it all.

I was restoring my 750 during this so I had parts scattered everywhere. From what I can tell, it's still all there, thank goodness. Frame and other things were getting powdercoated while the engine cases were in my apartment getting cleaned in the tub. I stacked all the new parts in a corner and it seems like it's still all there. What I DID notice is they f*cking stole my box of engine case fasteners which were sitting by the door. Who in the f*ck would steal a box of old bolts!? I had them set aside to take to the electroplater today. Now I can't even bolt the engine back together! Motherf*cker!!!

Sometimes, I just don't understand why.

CSPD isn't much help. I have to file a report online...yay. This is why I miss the small town life. Everyone knows everyone and everyone looks out for everyone.

That really sucks!  I know the feeling, as it's happened to me before.  Luckily they didn't touch my bikes, either.  The thing is, there's a good chance you know the person who did it, because they knew there was something in there worth stealing.  Either the neighbor himself, or one of his friends, or an apartment employee, or somebody else who not only knows what you have but knows the neighbor often leaves his garage door open.  It leaves a very empty feeling in your gut.

That's the thing. My garage is the very last unit in the far back corner of the complex, away from the road and the majoroty of the tenants. The ONLY people who know I have all that stuff are the few who walk by after parking, the neighbors directly across from me, and the maintenance crew. I'm not suspecting it was my garage neighbor since he's 70 years old, barely senile, but very polite.

The complex just switched ALL their staff a week ago so it could have been an outgoing employee (which would be insane since I was always polite with the maintenace guy and staff. Whenever I was working in the garage and he needed a hand moving things, I was always there to assist).

The neighbor across from me has occasionally seen into my garage as 90% of the time I work with the door a third of the way up. I talked to the neighbor if he noticed anything suspicious last night. He said he didn't but I just have that gut feeling.

CSPD has to be the greatest law enforcement department on the planet. I have to wait for my report to process online. I already contacted my insurance company since I do have property insurance (thank goodness).

I've summed well over $2000 in tools and other things. I just know it's more than that but I just can't remember all that I had. All those years buying this tool and that tool, I just lost track but knew if I needed a tool to do something specific, I had it somewhere.

And find yourself some pics of your tools or as you were building your bike with tools laying around. Insurance companies like pics of that stuff to justify a good settlement for you.

I just sent the adjuster my listing. Ended up a little over $3500 and I still feel like I missed a lot of stuff.

But, I'm definately moving toward securing my garage. For a start, I picked up a trail camera (motion detected with IR flash), sheet steel, and structural steel. I'm looking into motion sensors and alarms. Figure it's a good investment even when I move. All I would have to do is rewire it.

Scumbags. I wish the world could be rid of them.

Smash and grabs got a radar detector out of my brother's car in a parking garage in Vegas a year ago.  Must have been interrupted, they left my laptop in the back, luckily.

It cost $700 to fix the window and replace the radar detector which should not have been on display in the windshield at all. (Hear Hear!)

I bet they could get $5 for it at a pawn shop. Not even enough for crack.

I just finished installing a security alarm in the garage. Wish I had invested in this beforehand. I highly recommend doing this since we never know when it could happen and never think it would happen to one of us.

I got the GE wireless system from Lowes. I spent just a couple hundred bucks to wire the garage and apartment. Great little system and loud as hell. It has numerous attachments, sensors, and additional alarms which integrate with one another. On the plus side, it has battery back ups which can still operate even when unplugged. I'm going to encase the console in a steel housing so it will make it harder to tamper with if discovered.

All in all, this is a great system especially if you live in an apartment. If you move, all you have to do is unplug it and plug it in the new place.

I also started reestablishing my tools. Gave me a bit of an uplift starting with a brand new set of tools. Kinda upgraded the toolset from what I had. I'm also developing a way to secure the toolbox making it more difficult to just pick it up and walk away with it.

A buddy of mine lost his tools in a burgulary. He turned in a list and individual prices from sears to his insurance co. When he took the check to sears, the lady said to buy sets, they are cheaper that way. They laid out two or three large sets on the floor, removed the tripled up tools for credit and replaced them with other things he wanted. It was like Christmas in january. He used part of the credit toward a bigger chest and when he got home he carriage bolted it through the back to 2x6's he put in the wall. That way when it was locked you couldn't reach the nuts to get it off the wall.
He realized his German Shepard was looking at one of the thieves when he called the dog back in. There were footprints in the snow where the dog was looking.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

I thought I was over this but I guess not.

Last night I went for a grocery run. As I passed the garages, I notice my neighbors garage door was open with his car inside. I just though maybe he's unloading or had plans on going back out. I return 2 hours later (around 7PM) and notice the garage is still open. So, to avoid another incident, I went ahead and shut his door.

Today as I came back from running some errands I happen to bump into the garage neighbor. I told him that I noticed his door was open last night so I went ahead and closed it. He was alright with it but I could tell he was a bit upset. He mentioned the troubles he was having with opening the door this past week. He asked if there were ways to open it manually but I walked him through showing him that only a maintenance guy can come buy to open the door release.

I go back to work in my garage and about twenty minutes later he comes asking for me. This time he brought his wife. Now these are just an old couple so I'm trying to be polite as possible yet having trouble forgiving them for leaving their door open all the time. The wife says they leave it open because of the odor from my garage creeps into theirs (two weeks ago I was cleaning my engine with turpentine. The smell got into their unit so I cleaned out all the reminence. As of this week, I haven't smelled the odor anymore). I explained to them I had appoligized to the manager and cleaned up the stench.

Well, before breaking off she finishes with, "Don't ever touch our garage. We're leaving it open." I'm sure you can tell my concern. We both get a little heated so all three of us head to the office to try and settle this. There's only one lady there and she has only so much authority. The office clerk said she would get back to us on Tuesday with a solution...just great. Needless to say, nothing was solved and the wife said she was going to keep the garage open.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice? The apartment people are pretty much a dead end until at least Tuesday. CSPD already has my report completed and on file as to why the criminals broke in in the first place. I know the neighbors own that garage so it's their property. But, since it infringes on my property, is there anything I can do about it?

Sorry about your loss. I would go up the chain, past the manager of the building to the owner. I would also find out the neighbors insurance company and notify them that your neighbor leaves their garage door open; I'm sure that might cause for an adjustment of their rate. I would think your insurance company would pay for the loss of your tools but it would be the building owners insurance that would pay for the damage to the wall. I would try to get the building owner as upset as you are about the situation,he'd have something to say to the manager about your neighbor that tempts thieves.

Sorry to hear about your tools and stuff. +1 on moving out if you can. I live out in the sticks and have security cameras and motion sensors. We had a van pull up the drive (330 feet) last summer. This guy gets out of the passenger side and his wife/GF/? is in the driver's seat. He pretends to be selling something - Told him I wasn't interested  and to get back in the van & leave. He proceeded to come closer - I introduced him to MR Glock 21 - he gladly left. I showed the video to the chief of police, he's a MC guy that comes by often to chat. They end up catching the duo two days later after they broke into a house about a mile away.

Good luck getting your insurance settlement and hopefully you can resolve your neighbor situation.
