No Spark on Cylinders 1 and 4
« on: December 27, 2011, 07:45:22 PM »
Well last night i was riding on the freeway (85+mph) and then my trusty ole Honda started to run really funny. My first instinct was it was low on gas so I reached down and switched the petcock to reserve, but still wanted to give out on me. Did i forget to mention I was on the 10/215 interchange bridge?  I got it off the freeway and into a parking lot and started to check things (with no tools of course).  Checked the gas, fuel lines, cables, oil, and fuses.  The only thing I saw was a dirty fuel filter, I thought might have been clogged and stopped the fuel flow. After being tired, annoyed and cold; I decided to call my very loving dad to pick me and my bike up with the trailer.
So I got off work today and got new fuel filter and lines. Put them on and my bike started, but barely!! So I checked the plugs and they were good enough to run. I checked the spark for the plugs and 2 & 3 plugs spark but 1 & 4 had nothing. I tried changing the plugs, and testing the spark with the screwdriver idea but still nothing.   :(

So I'm guessing that its my 1 & 4 coil gone bad or my points?
If it were my ignition then all 4 cylinders would have no spark, right?
If anyone could help with this little problem, it would be very appreciated

You have a classic ignition problem. These bikes fire two cylinders at a time 1&4 and 2&3. You have to go over it point by point .  Check your wires caps, cut off bit of the tip and screw the caps back in. You will need to look at your points. Check for pitting, broken rubbing blocks or simply a loose wire.
Check your coils and you will find instructions on the site if you search. If one failed the other is not far behind, new ones cost $36 with wires from CB750Supply. Don;t buy used coils or you can wind up like you are now.

If by some chance you have a Dyna electronic ignition, then one of your pickups took a dump.

...don't forget about your condensers...if you have to replace/clean up your points better just replace the condensers...they are tricky to test conclusively and cheap to replace anyway...
If it works good, it looks good...

Points or Dyna you can switch the wires from the ignition to the coil and check with a timing light or 12V bulb tester to make sure your dyna/points are triggering the coils correctly. If they are when you switch them then the 1/4 coil is bad. If the problem follows the cable switch, you have a bad point/condensor/ dyna pickup/trigger.

Great news!!  ;D
I checked the points and they looked fine but points 1 & 4 had no voltage while 2 & 3 did. So I went to the coils and it turns out that the black and yellow wire got disconnected somehow while riding.  I connected it and reached over to the kickstart and was able to start her with my hand  ;)  1st try and she runs great now.
Now since I actually looked at the points I got to wondering.  Is it better to keep the stock ignition or get aftermarket ignition? like Dyna or Cycle X?
Same thing with coils. When they go out, should i get OEM or aftermarket?

Thanks for all the help guys!

I recommend the "HondaMan electronic Ignition" which is for sale by the member of that same name...you keep your O.E.points and they work together with the ignition.

Steven I like the HondaMan system as well. I guess they all have there pros & cons I have seen some post that start looking like oil threads. So do your homework. Here is HondaMans site.

I like after market coils of the same 5 ohms but with wires you can replace.
