New old one in Germany
« on: January 03, 2012, 11:07:59 AM »
Hello SOHCs.

After driving some BMWs and servicing a more recent CBF500, a CB550K has found its way to our stables. It came with a sidecar, which is why we got it anyway, to find out if we like sidecar drive (yes, we do  ;D ).
WE, are me and my girlfriend Sabine, we are located in the north of Germany. There are some Honda forums here, but I am happy that I found this place with some great info and knowledgeable drivers/mechanics.

I got my hands dirty while checking valve gaps setting and contact braker timing (both perfect), but kept having starting problems. Removed the Keihins PD46A, changed floats from 13.0 mm to 14.5 mm and adjusting the choke fast idle thing helped a bit. I have to check the small battery (12 Ah) with the Volt meter if it is still up to the task, probably not.

Other than that the engine leaks oil from somewhere beneath the left hand cover, haven't located it any better now. The engine was alraedy worked on, silicone stuff comes off when one rubs along the seal lines  :o

Well, so much for now, take care and enjoy many sunny miles in 2012,

Well,

thank you for the warm welcome. I have some problems registering for the Gallery, so if you don't mid looking elsewhere:
the usual letters and then cbf500.net/bilder/cb550/CB550.html

Yesterday I wasn't allowed to post external links, is there a reason for this?

@ Andy750: enjoyed Boston 3 years ago in December, friends took me to the "Barking Crab"  ;D

Best regards,

Your modified link worked fine Chris, very nice condition CB with a custom paint job, what year is it? (I know the 500s were available in Europe well past the last year over here, '73 in NA)  Your posting problems might be related to the restrictions on new members until you get past 5 posts.

Thank you for your interest. It went on the road first in June 1979, it saw several owners and I got hold of it last years July as pictured, including paint job. The only work I have done so far is invisible (new tyres, carb cleaning and minor adjustment, clutch cable cleaning).

The sidecar is attached through a 4-point Schmid support frame and I bought it that way, therefore I have no idea if it went on easily. What I have found out during the past 800 km (500 mi) is that the geometry of the setup could be improved, but this is with my very limited sidecar experience.

Today I took some measurements on the battery: 12.2 V after yesterdays ride, down to 10.5 V with ignition on, down to 10.2 with lights on. Drops to 9.5V after a 20 second attempt to start. I guess I need a new battery, sigh :(
But aren't we happy to get the fingers dirty?  8)

Best regards,

have the same messur as you...but start with to load the battery full..before testing..if it not are 12,5 volt from start..the loading sistem vill not give full load..but test with no light on..front light eats a lot of loading kapasitet..spec if you have 55w..instead og the original ca40w

i put a new battery in after this test..and the loading got stronger
