One Kick Wonder - I want my bike to start 1st kick everytime
« on: December 28, 2011, 06:39:58 PM »
I don't know what it is maybe I just got Fonzie envy, but would love it if I could get my 73 CB750 to start 1st kick every time.  Is there anyone who is willing to share their secrets on how to turn my bike into a 1 kick wonder.

Thanks!

Completely clean fuel SYSTEM.
NO GAS PISSING CARBS, fuel levels EQUAL and CORRECT in bowls.
Dwell and timing DEAD ON with clean points and good condensers
Known GOOD plugs gapped to spec w/ no deposits
Coils and wires that don't arc/leak, new or tested good plug caps
Fully charged battery
Properly functioning charging system
Compression within spec for ALL 4 cyls.
Valves set to spec and cam chain tensioned correctly
Chokes adjusted in unison to open/close simultaineously
Fresh fuel helps.
My k5 will usually start warm with about 1 revolution of the crank
but that's with the button. The starter turns so briefly, you really
have to listen for it. What you're asking for is possible, but more likely to happen with a warm engine. just my .02

PS.....cleaning ALL electrical connectors of the entire bike's wiring
goes a long way in ensuring good voltage to everything, which includes/benefits the ignition system.

No in Syracuse we get a good taste of cold so I am thinking  the grail hunt is on!  I guess all the guys out there who say their CB750 starts first kick every time are full of it.

ekpent,  LOL we don't need no stinking kickers.

My F1 will start on the first or second kick every time.  It's a low mileage bike with a spotless fuel system and I keep it in a good state of tune.  Running original points ignition. That one started on the third kick after a 25 year slumber.  My 79 XS with high miles can take 5 or 7 kicks sometimes more.  I suspect the compression is a bit below specs and maybe needs a thorough going over.

On the other hand I picked up a rough low mileage 75 XS650 last plated in 1990 that started on the third kick and on the first kick after that till I disassembled it. ;D  How hard can it be?  Three seems to be the magic number. ;)

Today I was screwing around with my bike and I had a low battery do I reached for the kick start with my hand  and put all my weight into it and she started up 1st kick (well push with hand) but the bike was somewhat warm still  ;D
usually starts within 1-3 kicks though!!

I agree with the three kick rule....... after all it normally takes 1 to 2 kicks on a dead cold engine for it to be breathing air and fuel (with or without choke).......turn the key and fire on the third.....always puts a smile on my face.... :D

1) obv, good tuning.
2) AGM Battery
3) a 'primer kick' or two with the key off. . .like w1sa mentions.

She starts on the first kick when warm.  Didn't try it cold yet.  I have Pamco and hotter coils, never had her really running with points.

Ok, from what I am hearing unless your bike it in perfect tune it's going to take 1 or 2 primer kicks or twist if carbs are equipped with accelerator pump to get the bike to start on first kick cold.

Can you try to kick it over cold and see if it starts with one big Fonzie style kick?  Would love to know if the Ultimate Pamco can turn a CB750 into a 1 kick Wonder.  From what everyone here is saying primer kicks or throttle twist with accelerator are necessary.  Give it a go and report back to us.

Phil you must be the SOHC master.  Best answer yet.  Bet you just will it to start, or it starts on it's own like a Honda version of Christine.  Just not the same without the radio playing those erie old tunes though.

My K3 will start with a push of a button everytime! I have kick started it, but at 50+ in age...I don't digg that coolness much  ;)

Yeah I hear what your saying and I am only pushing 40.  Watching me try to kick over my cb750 is like watching a six week old puppy take a trip to the Christmas tree farm.

Every honda-4 I'ev ever owned or ever know of that was kept in a good state of tune started on first kick every time.  There is no secrete to it, just keep it tuned right and use the choke.

Acellerator pump helps.. leaking intake tubes will make it harder.
The one I am riding now has a tired original motor, 3 yr old points, year old plugs,  still can start with 1 kick in 30 degree weather, if I charge the sworeout battery...

Install my Ignition, and pull the choke closed if cold. Works for me... :)

I've got a '72 motor so I have to kick. The po swapped to PD carbs. It's a first kick starter hot/cold and needs very little choke.......but I'm currently working to find the cause  of the engine missing at 3500 rpm and up....so in my case 1st kick does not= run good!
