Author Topic: How to nicely refinish the male flare on my caliper body ? (Read 4060 times)

I just purchased a good used front caliper for my CB400F,it came with a metal pipe that is not O.E. + a bit smaller of a female flare fitting on the metal pipe.I want to find a special tool(from a professional brake repair shop??)that can somehow restore the cone shape to the male flare inside the caliper body.I want to do this as correctly as Original so the new brake pipe will give an excellent seal.I imagine that someone may have encountered this problem before...I guess I could get it to "seal" w/o fixing the inner cone flare...I don't want to do any halfway measure on my bike;I want it right.

Anybody run into this problem with a good fix ?? THANKS

I pull them out and use a banjo bolt after tapping hole deeper

I know there is a special tool for automotive use but I've never seen one (cone cutter?)

sorry pics would be great but try this to get a good seal. use your existing pipe/flare and some fine valve lapping compound. put some in the cone and install the old pipe finger snug and lap the joint. flush all and all should be good.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you also John & a great 2012 all year long ! I am in the process of trying to enlist Danno to help me upload pics w/ a special photo editor that he helped to install on my computer...but he has been too busy to get me to that step.I desperately want to learn how to shrink pics(I'm brand new to computers)so the forum can let me upload...tried a few times already.
I want to go to a brake shop specialist and ask about a special tool, or show the caliper to them and see if they have any Truly Professional help. I want to get this one right.

keep it simple dude..try the lapping trick. have fixed many 3000 psi flared fittings this way and should work for our little sohc bike brake systems.
computers are easy..heck if i can figure them out anyone can!!

Thanks for the encouragement John; do you think that a special tool is made that can concentrate on just refinishing the male cone ? I'm afraid the lapping compound will also machine the female flare on the steel pipe.......maybe if I had 2 of them....I could just use one for the lapping work and install the other one.I'm going to do a little research to see if one is available;there are probably plenty of metric size Auto brake lines that I can put to use. Thanks for those suggestions ! I will also spend more time w/ the computer(on my own $:-\$ )and see how to resize those pics.

Check into the mentioned banjo bolt and flare adapter, it seals with a washer rather than the factory cone. Unless you really want it original.

That flare adapter...that would then give me the option of using a double ended standard more modern style of brake hose.....wouldn't it ??

grc I under stand your concern about using your pipe.If you lap like john said I would think that would be best would it not match the pair?

You could always pull it and make a new one from stainless (or brass)
I had forgotten I made some about 10yrs ago to fit new lines but last few I did I just modified to use one longer braided line and hydraulic banjo bolt switch

Yes. Earls, Aeroquip, Goodrich, etc makes them, They are the ones I used on my dual disc conversion. A search here should turn up the size, I'm thiniking 10mm x 1.25 thread banjo bolt and a banjo to -3 an hose. do a search for brake line fittings and it will turn up some ideas. In the for sale section, there is an ad by a member makes lines for them. He may be able to hook you up.

remove piston, use finishing nail inserted from inside so head pulls on cone fitting..grab end of nail with vicegrips, tap out.. been done since the mid 70s for dual discs, goes in eithe hole in the caliper..

You can replace it but would you not want to lap in the new one anyway? To match your line fitting. The only reason to replace is if it were damaged beyond repair IMHO.

I have been told that the 750 ones will come out but having tried on a 350/400/500/550 i dont think they will as they are machined as a part of the body.

As i understand the engineering of it, the angle on the pipe and caliper are slightly different so that when you tighten the pipe nut they"bite" together to create the seal.

If in doubt get a pipe made from "Cunifer" (trade name) or copper pipe as it is more pliable, but be sure the fitting at the flexi joint end has a plain bit (No thread) at the end or it wont go far enough in
