Terry's bargain of the week!
« on: May 23, 2006, 02:48:42 AM »
Well if you've all followed my various tales of woe this week regarding how I've been bent over and raped by a scum sucking pig of an Ebay Arehole. (I was so incensed that he'd left me a negative after taking my money and not sending me the item that I accidentally left the "S" out of "Arsehole" in my reply to his negative feedback)

But we also touched on the subject of a set of Dellorto 40DHLA carbs, which of course were "De Rigeur" (the ducks nuts, dog's bollocks etc depending on your local slang) of the 1970's racing (and posing) fraternity, that were on Ebay here in Melbourne, Australia, and that I wanted more than a blow job from Jennifer Anniston, were eventually snapped up by a wealthy American for a tad over $1000.00, (about 750 US) which was well beyond my meagre means. Bummer!

Well I soon discovered that Dellorto 40DHLA carbs, while quite rare, are still more common than some things (like my beautiful ARD Magneto) and a guy in Italy reconditions them and sells them on Ebay, mainly to purveyors of horrible underpowered Euro trash "Sports" cars. (and we ALL know that if it aint got at least 8 cylinders, there's nothing "sporty" about it!) Anyway, he offers a heap of services, including setting them up with the correct jetting per your particular application, all for the "giveaway" price of $300.00 "Buy it now". "Hmmmmnnnnn", I wondered to myself, the "adapter plate" for adapting these carbs to a CB750 looks pretty simple to fab up, as I have a lathe and mill, mig welder set up for alloy etc at my disposal, so why not dip my toe in the water and buy a set?

I PM'd him on Saturday (in Italy) but still haven't received a response which always worries me a tad when we're talking about committing 300 bucks plus over 100 more for shipping, and I was relating this story to one of my staff yesterday, who said "well I've got a set of those Dellorto carbs at home, would you like to buy them?" I almost whispered "how much?" and he replied "How about 100 bucks?" I fainted...................

I woke up with a cold compress on my feverish brow and there he was, looking down on me, the late afternoon sun reflecting off his deep blue eyes, somehow reminiscent of Jennifer Anniston, er, sorry, I was getting a little poetic, anyway, I croaked "how about 200 mate?" (about $150.00 US) As you all know, I am a man of low morals, but even a scaly creature such as myself knows that while you should never look a gift horse in the mouth, you shouldn't bite the, er, hoof (?) that feeds you either? (If you understand my meaning, even though I'm not sure that I do)

Anyway, this morning Rob (my new best mate) brought them in, and he even threw in a book on setting them up, a set of new manifold gaskets, and a new set of K&N pod style filters, woohoo! (they probably won't fit on the bike, but I can sell them and put that money towards a set of smaller filters) Now I've kept the pics of the Ebay carbs with the proper "Lynx" adapter plate (first pic) and I reckon that it won't be too hard to replicate, and I think the new K7/K8 inlet rubbers that Mike Rieck sent me will be best suited due to their compact design, I'll machine up some "spiggots" the same OD as the F2 carbs and weld them to the adapter plate, which in turn will be bolted onto the Dellorto's.

Then, with a little more fabrication for things like throttle and choke mechanism, a bracket to hang them off the bike frame and of course some experimentation with jetting, (Rob was running them on a small ford 4 cylinder sohc car engine) they should be good to go! Have a look at the pics and let me know what you think! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hey Terry,  That is going to be one wicked setup for the Honda. I, for one, can
hardly wait to see how it turns out and how it performs. Also, congrats on getting the
carbs. in the 1st place.                       Later on, Bill

I'm not meaning to change this topic to " Daniels Bargain of the week!" but look what I just won on ebay!!!!!

Daniel

Hey Daniel, well done! Obviously a case of a seller not knowing what he's selling, and a very astute buyer! Can you do me a favour and take some close up pics of the adapter plate and those rubbers? I saw the "Mikuni carbs to CB750" rubber inlets on a website somewhere back in the greenspun days, the carb spacing on the dellortos is a lot closer to the Suzuki/Kawasaki spacing (I compared them to a set of Mikuni flat slides I've got out in my garage) so buying some of them might be a lot easier easier than my original plan? Cheers, Terry. ;D

Well it's interesting that you say that Doc, I'm looking at a pic now of one twin barrel Dellorto carb on a special "Lynx" manifold for a 4 cylinder Ford engine with equal length intake runners, one barrel feeds cylinders 1 and 4, and the other cyinders 2 and 3. It looks pretty good, and one of these carbs would be fine on a CB750 I'd reckon.

I think the only problem would be that because of the physical size of this manifold and carb combo, you wouldn't have enough room for an air cleaner. The thing that concerns me with the other single carb manifolds is their poor design, which is of course a compromise between efficiency and just making it fit on the bike, but the "just start up and ride away" thing is more a symptom of an over-rich mixture, than anything else.

My K1 will start without any choke and will pull away no problem, and if I could ignore the black smoke and the lousy fuel economy, not to mention the eventual damage caused by an over-rich mixture, it'd be very convenient. Personally I don't care because I start the other bikes on the choke, then idle them on the centre stand while putting on my jacket and helmet etc, and by then the oil has had time to circulate around the engine and clutch/gearbox, and the bike is ready to take me where I want to go. Cheers, Terry. ;D

G'Day Sean, yeah mate, I've been in the "planning" stages for around 18 months now, I've collected pretty much all I need apart from a heavy duty cylinder stud kit, but with Mike's head, the 836CC kit, F2 bottom end, M3 Cam chain tensioner, Megacycle 125/75 cam you sent me, the ARD Magneto, etc etc etc, those carbs will be the "Icing on the cake".

You know, if people would stop sending me money to make them oil cooler kits for their CB's, I'd probably get some time to actually assemble it! Oh well, it's always gonna be there for my retirement, if I ever get time to retire, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks Bill, those RC engines must be absolute beasts, (our good mate "Objectionable One") has an RC bike, but I bet that the 2000 bucks price tag limited sales back then, hell I can't afford one now, ha ha! I still haven't found Tim a KTM T Shirt, I wish he'd just asked for money for that alternator cover, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hey listen, when you do get those carbs setup on your bike, sure would like to see them.
the engine response with those babies ought to be impressive, as long as you've got what it
takes to get the exhaust out of there afterwards (which I know you will). You take care, keep
up the good work and if I happen to find one of those shirt I'll let you know, okay?

Thanks Bill, and don't worry mate, when I (finally) get the racer project up and running, I'll be sure to bore the pants off everyone with my bragging, but i need to er, lose a little weight before I climb back into my leathers, I took my belt off last night, and the unrestrained pressure launched the button off my pants with such force it knocked one of the wife's cat's off the ironing board and damn near took it's eye out! Cheers, Terry. ;D
