Please Help! Leaking carb gaskets / High idle
« on: January 01, 2012, 07:17:24 PM »
On my 1978 cb 550k w/8K miles:

I just rebuild my carbs and all the floats were free. Bowls were clean. Jet's were a bit shabby.

Most of my concern is the black rubber rings (gaskets) were very flat and definitely not suffecient. I'm 99% certain their the reason some of my carb bodies are still dripping gas.

Assuming it's just the gaskets thats the reason their leaking...how important is it that I change them? I will eventually replace them regardless but there might be other repairs more needed in the short term and I want to spend my money wisely.

Also, i started playing with the idle screws on each carb and now it idles aroung 3,000 and i can tell theres uneven heat coming from the exaust lines. Also, the longer it idles the higher it climbs. Should my next steps on this be to sync the carbs? Or should setting them all to 1 1/2 turn out be suffecient?

Much appreciated.

Forgot to mention that the exaust, in the section after the 4 tie into one, has a small leak and it is blowing out small amonts of black oil.

It's kinda funny when 'nubies' here ask a question and then immediately sign-off .. :D...
Bro, need to ask Q's in the 'Tech Forum' to get proper 'exposure' to your question.... maby the mods will move this post... or better OP delete it and ask in the proper place ... Good luck
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
