78 750K... "Upgrade" to pods and 4-2 exhaust
« on: May 23, 2006, 08:08:06 AM »
Hey Guys! My first post...so be easy on me!

I've been lurking for a while here - after reading about these awesome bikes, I took the plunge last week and bought one.  It's a 78 750K in decent shape, but not in the best cosmetic condition - chrome pitting and rust spots on the frame.  I'm working on changing that!!  Was up until 2:30 AM last 2 nights!!!

The engine runs great w/ the stock airbox and an aftermarket 4-1 exhaust. (PO replaced the points and condenser, mercury synched the carbs and reset the timing)   But... I'd like to "upgrade" to pod filters and a 4-2 exhaust.  Anyone running a similar setup?  I've searched the archives and have found a wealth of info... What steps should I take before I change the components?  Should I change?

Saw a MAC 4-2 on eBay... Are they any good?  Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Bryan

pods are the devil, Bobby!!!!   >:( >:( >:(

your bike looks great and runs good... don't fool with pods.  that's my advice.  i have a 78 that i tried to use pods on and it was a nightmare.  best of luck to you if you do.

Yeah, i gotta agree with that. Most owners use pods
because the carb-to-airbox rubbers have deteriorated.
Pods will require rejetting, so if it ain't broke....

Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

What are your intentions for the bike?  If you're heading towards a performance oriented bike (i.e. a cafe racer or the like) your current 4 into 1 setup is perfect.  If the bike runs nicely with it, it means it's been tuned to it.  If you put on 4 into 2 pipes and pods, you're into new jets, needle positions etc. and tuning the carbs.  Read all the posts from people with problems getting their bikes to run nice and smooth, then decide to mess around with yours :)

Thanks for the words of wisdom!!  I'll probably just get a new all chrome 4-1 exhaust then...

Where's the best place to source a new exhaust?  I've checked the links in the FAQs but was wondering if anyone had any great experiences with a certain company.

Unlucky71: Im pretty sure your avatar pic refers to the never ending battle between ninjas and pirates, not the bikes.  Just google Pirates versus Ninjas...its rediculous, in a funny way.

I have pods and 4-2 frankenpipes on my chopper.  If you prefer sound over performance, that's the way to go.  For performance, no way.  You can actually change the airflow to the carbs with your leg position.  Makes it almost impossible to get exactly right.  I spent weeks figuring that one out.

BTW, nice machine.
