installing newer forks on a 1978 cb750
« on: January 01, 2012, 07:52:42 PM »
I just joined the forums and I don't know if this is the right forum for this question but I want to put a newer front end on my 1978 cb750k that I am making into a cafe racer. I was thing something off of a GSXR, CBR, etc. Can this be done? Has anyone done this that could give me some pointers on which one will fit and what modifications I will have to make?
 Thanks,
Jon

Welcome!  Those types of swaps are absolutely doable.  Just do a search for GSXR fork swap or something like that.  You should get a ton of ideas.
Here today, gone tomorrow.  Make the most of today!

I have done a small bit of research in the past just by seeing what makes and models of front ends you like to use will be compatible with a tapered roller bearing headset upgrade kit for your motorcycle...like an "All Balls" kit;Ebay has these kits for sale w/ the list of different bikes that the kit will fit. It's possible to make a custom steering stem triple tree also and fit what ever you like w/ a bit of fabrication & machine work.I just hope that the frame will be able to take the extra stress of such a solid set of front forks with out some flex...possibly a steering damper will help w/ that.
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !
Do your BEST...nobody can take that away from you.

The easiest way to do a front end swap is to press out your existing steering stem and  have it fitted to whatever new model front end triple trees you want to use. PRess fit and pin the stem for good measure. I did a swap using a 89 GSXR 1100 frontend this way. If you reuse the stock stem you can use tapered bearings for the Honda instead of sourcing bearings to fit both the newer model triple tree OD and the Honda frames ID. Plus the length of the stem is right to begin with. I'm sure others have done this in a thousand different ways, this was simplest for me.
