Decided to ship the cylinders and pistons to Cycle X so they can "marry" the new pistons to the cylinders. I'll repack the oil pump, perform Hondaman's clutch mod, and probably start refurbishing the wiring harness while I'm waiting for the nuptials to be consummated.

Mark(?) at Cycle X indicated about two week turnaround (door-to-door). The peace of mind, knowing that the shop is familiar with these engines, is worth the trouble of packing it up and shipping.

The gift registry can be found here: http://www.cyclexchange.net/Honda%20Page.htm

Yeah, I thought I was set. UPS ground shipping was only $36 with $400 insurance. Got the oil pump repacked with new o-rings last night, along with a new oil pan gasket. The Hondaman clutch hub mod is complete and the spanner nut socket should arrive today so I can close up the clutch. I'll probably start working my mojo on the wiring harness this week, then I'll tackle the carbs.

Going to make my own degree wheel and piston stop so I can fine tune the cam timing before closing up the engine. Will post picts of both the fabrication and use of the home made tools.

Should be running by Christmas!

My degree wheel:

I have attached the pdf. I'll either print it on a full sheet label (8-1/2" x 11") and stick it to a piece of tin, or I'll print it on regular paper and use spray adhesive to stick it to a piece of tin.

I also have the cad file, since I drew it myself. If anyone wants it just drop me a line.

Had a local guy say he could "surface" the head for $30. When I hear "surface" in relationship to head to cylinder gasket mating surfaces I believe the process to involve actual milling machinery or some sort of dedicated surface grinder designed for the purpose. This guys idea of "surfacing" the head involved a belt sander. I'll bet the guy down the street at the cabinet shop would do it for half that price...

Looks like I'll follow Frank's advice. I've already got a wide sanding belt, so I'll cut a flat section, put that over the glass, and I'll scuff the overly smoothed surface (from the lapping compound on the "elbow mill") to give the surface some teeth to bite into the head gasket. CylceX should receive the cylinders today for boring/honing/surfacing (I'll bet they don't use a belt sander) so hopefully I'll have them back soon. I'm really jonesing to get the motor back in the frame. Till then I'll lap the valves and start on the wiring harness. Tank and sidecovers need paint so prep work to begin on those soon as well.

I love this. Great job, now what can I attach it to? (As far as the crank goes.)

Lol even if its in a wet "bath"? Like a tile cutter? Some 800 grit should do just fine. ;) Or you could just do what Uncle/Cousin Jimbo used to do and run two head-gaskets glued together to make up for any imperfections or differences in deck height after a good grinding.

With a 6mm hole you could use the ignition stud, just don't use this stud to turn the engine, it's too small. To turn the crank I would suggest either the alternator bolt or the bolt on the end of the cam. With a bigger center hole you could use the alternator bolt to mount the degree wheel but then you would have to use something else to turn the crank (again, not the ignition stud). The clutch cover and clutch lifter bearing are off mine right now so I'll use the clutch hub nut to turn the crank.

That sounds good. I just dont understand how you line it up perfectly and make sure it doesnt move at all.

you need the accuracy. ;D

How accurate? Half a degree?

Quarter (0.25) of a degree?

This ain't no napkin sketch...  ;)

I could do hash marks to the 1/10, 1/100, or 1/1000 of a degree, but I would have to print a 48" diameter circle...

and get a taller engine stand!  ;D

Definitely appreciate the feedback, you've put a lot more of these together than I have. This will be the first one that I will actually bother to verify the accuracy of the cam degree. Nothing fancy, 1mm overbore (62mm) with a stock cam, just going to do it more for an exercise than anything. If the stock cam is off far enough I'll get a slotted sprocket and 'dial it in".  8)

It's back on again! Bought a 97' Suburban in December and I spent the next two months to whip it into shape as a daily driver. The P.O. got their money's worth out of it, since everything I touched was either broke or wore slap out. Now I have a heavy hauler back in the fleet:

Started stripping the tank for paint prep. The fuel door latch had seen better days:

The rolled pin approaching freedom after opening up the opposite side (oh, and a hammer may be required, just be sure to properly support the piece):

Once the rolled pin is freed, then the bottom "cone" can be liberated. I used my thumbnail around the base of it to work it free, then the cylinder slides out the top:

There are a total of nine ten parts (there's a little plastic washer under the collar/bezel that rests on the tank lid). I recommend doing this over a large tray while sitting at a table. See the little key "door"? I dropped that on the garage floor and had a heck of a time spotting it. See the little key door spring next to it? Glad I didn't drop that! The outer "cap" is secured by two tabs that are bent over to hold it in place. Be careful not to bend those tabs too far down when reinstalling or they can interfere with the key door. Insert and remove a key after putting the cap on to verify freedom of movement of the key door. The picture below is an "after" shot after I had already treated the cap to a hammer and punch on the anvil:

VOILA'!

and TA-DA!

Took all of about 45 minutes, with most of that being painstaking care removing the rolled pin. That is probably the most critical step and the most likely to break something.

The chrome on the lettering is in good shape, so I don't have to deal with painting the letters. I've had good results with other tank badges with just about any rattle can gloss black for the background, since it is such a small surface it is very forgiving.

Got the badges painted. Masking is a PITA but sure makes painting easier:

I'll likely hit them with some 2-part clear at the same time I'm clear coating the tank to help make them petroleum resistant.

Got the carbs rebuilt.

Before (yuck):

After (suhweet):

And finally, I have started workin' my mojo on the wiring harness and fished this out of a box-o-parts:

Funny, I don't remember fuses being that expensive....  :o  ;)

Classic.

Nice work on those badges.  Did you use a silver paint on them?

The badges were in pretty good shape. Hard to tell from the picts, but the fork badge has silver chrome and the tank badges are the original gold chrome. It was mostly intact so I just masked the letters and painted the background.
