MLS Head Gasket

Here are some pictures of the MLS Head Gasket from Kenny (Cyclex)
They are a 3 piece gasket held together with 4 small rivets.
Overall thickness (uncrushed) is .0305".
The centre "shim" is plain steel measuring .010" and both of the outers are coated each side.
They should be a good thing.  8)

Just put one in my new 836 motor. Just fired up yesterday, so far so good!

The later model bikes have been using these for years now. No gasket sealer recommended or required.

Glad we now have them for the SOHC's.

I know Cycle X has them, they dont list different thicknesses but maybe they offer them?. Dynoman has them in a couple of different thicknesses also.  I also used Dynomans coated steel base gasket, those are available in different thicknesses as well.  I'm glad they are available now too, just wish they weren't so expensive!!

I assume that they are throw away gaskets??? Once its compressed thats the end of the usable life. Great for a street bike but not so good for a race bike application where you're tearing it down once or twice a season. Ouch!!

Useable two- or three times with copper.
My friend uses them on his 1246c GSX-R dragbike, never had a leak.Well I suppose he had a leak several times a day but no oil leak ;)

I use my copper head gasket twice. Its got an o-ringed block so once the gasket bites into the copper o-ring, i just clean it up, anneal it then flip it over for re-use. In a pinch, i'll use it 3 times. Still gets hung up on a nail- just in case-lol.

I got on from cycle x for my 836 kit that is being put in. Hopefully no issues will let you guys know.

You need to have the head surface and the top of the cylinder surfaced to the spec for the MLS gasket.  It is a very fine finish when they are done.  There is a big difference in the finish between a standard finish and the correct finish for these gaskets.  Plus the surfaces need to flat, no warping across the surface.

I will also find out at weeks end weather or not they can be laser cut to fit
over bore motors 77mm plus
I sent some up after I gently pulled them apart
will make a fixture to locate on the dowel pin holes and then laser
cut each one separately
will keep you posted

You will have to ask Ken about it, Dynoman also sells MLS gaskets, Cometic brand... 

MLS stands for Multi-Layer Steel. MLS head gaskets are comprised of three layers of stainless steel. The outer layers are an embossed viton coated stainless steel providing a superior seal with excellent rebound characteristics and are corrosive resistant. MLS head gaskets reduce bore distortion and withstand extreme cylinder pressures.

Cometic Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gaskets go on dry because they are coated with a sealant. Each MLS head gasket is coated with a .001" thick viton rubber that is bonded to the outer stainless steel layers. Adding an additional sealer can hinder the performance of an MLS head gasket.

MLS head gaskets require smooth, flat and true head and deck surfaces to seal. Most of the time with o-ring setups the wire and groove fall where our gasket’s combustion seal is located; therefore, the wire will hold the gasket and not allow proper compression while the receiver grooves allow combustion gases to escape.

A surface finish of 50 RA (roughness average) or finer, is recommended for a proper gasket seal. Anything rougher may conflict with the gasket design.

When using MLS head gaskets always refer to the manufacturer of the fastener to determine accurate torque values
