Gasket set selection and synthetic oil's
« on: January 02, 2012, 09:38:51 AM »
Okay, I'm putting on my padded suit to ask this question.  :o
I'm doing my first engine rebuild and I'm getting ready to order parts.
Do new current gasket sets work with synthetic oil's?   ie. The syn oil will decompose the gasket.

I've searched the forum and haven't found a clear answer.
Even Hondaman's post talks about experimenting with this question with a current rebuild.

What's your experience?
Thanks everyone!  :) :)

Oh no, your trying to get me to swim with the crocodiles :)!

I've been running  rotella on the 360 and the 750.
But with the rebuild I'd like to switch to full syn on the 750.
Haven't gone there yet!
Thanks
Steve

Why, oh, why are you so keen on a synthetic oil? People - and especially in this here madhouse -ae real masters in projecting their desires in things they can't see like in synthetic oil or in electronic ignitions. Don't you think that if synthetic oils had prooven to be sooo superior, they had wiped all the other oils from the market by now?
BTW, your mother instinct ("nothing but the best for my baby") is counterproductive. Every mechanic can tell you that new parts in an engine are ideally broken in with a cheap and simple oil.

I would certainly do the new engine break in miles w/ standard non-synthetic oil so that the parts "seat-in" correctly.

+1 on breaking in with conventional oils.

Over the holidays as all the men were standing around the barbque pit watching the smoke rise and going "ooohhhhhh!" as the lid was raised.
My nephew talked about oil efficiencies and this is my take on it.
He is head engineer at a power plant. They are in the business of making money by selling electricity. Coal fired power plants are only around 30% efficient. Anything to raise that efficiency or increase the life of equipment means more money for the company.

He gave an example of switching a big generator to their current syn oil. They had a 3% increase in efficiency and lower temperatures. These are cold blooded engineers measuring and testing and computing results. They TEST every thing. Bearing wear, independent oil analysis, temperature, and things I don't even remember. (We were drinking beer and watching barbque! :o)

They now run industrial grade full syn in all the plant machinery (generators, turbines, left handed widgets). They run automotive grade full syn in plant vehicles (cars, trucks, bulldozers). No motorcycles!
The plant engineers said, and the accountants agreed it was wise to switch.
He now runs full syn in his personal vehicles (some vintage).
That's why I'm keen to try the syn oils.

I'm going to try it in the rebuilt 750.
I'll keep the 360 on Rotella as it run's great and needs no engine work.

That sounds like a decent switch...Please make sure that the synthetic oil you use is compatible with your motorcycle wet clutch;I did the full synthetic Castrol switch over in a Honda I owned a number of years back and it ran and shifted great...but I ended up completely frying all my clutch plates and had to $replace them.I recommend either Torco motorcycle oil or Spectro...but there are MANY different manufacturer's out there now;I think it's a good idea to go with the synthetic once that motor is COMPLETELY & FULLY broken-in and all the parts seated 100% for maximum seal,I'd give it a few thousand miles of good all-around loading and unloading of power at all different rpms.

In re: to the OP.. I have been running synthetic on a replaced head gasket for about 7 years now? No leaks.
I did catch a leak at my breather gasket.. and replaced that.. no leaks x 1 year or so?

I dont remember what brand gasket kit I used.. some popular third-party thing.

Also.. my electronic ignition has proven totally compatible with my gasket kit as well.
