Starlight gold vs.candy gold
« on: January 04, 2012, 05:34:22 AM »
I have an 7/71 cb500  painted in its original starlight gold.  My question is there a difference between starlight gold and candy gold that they switched to in 72? It looks the same in pictures but I haven't compared.  If its the same I am going to have my 72 cb750 painted gold and my painter wants a color to match it to......

Yes. There is a difference between the two CB500 candy gold's as defined by the Honda color codes: KC and LX

CB500 K0 = KC (starlight gold)

CB500 K1 = LX (candy gold custom)

To compare to the CB750 candy gold, be aware that the 69-70-71 used color code: CQ (candy gold) and then switched to color code: LX (candy gold custom) for 72.

These three different candy gold's (KC-LX-CQ) all appear the same until you compare them side-by-side, then the (shade) differences become apparent.

The (pre-mixed) paint can codes were:

KC = Y3C
CQ = Y2C
LX = Y2C-C

Having been there and tried to do that i could not find a camera that would show the difference.

Also here in UK I took an original 71 sidecover to RS paints (they can supply all the Honda colours in 3 pack) and they could not tell the difference between it and the later paint they supplied.

SO unless you are unlucky enough to park next to an original one of the other colour you aint gonna tell---ALSO if you use the proper 3 pack every pass of the transparent colour coat will subtly change the tone anyway
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

So according to Hinomarus codes it would be - CQ = Y2C

This is what I thought as well.

Thanks

No clue as to the actual gold used in the photo. However, the earliest reference to candy gold can be seen in the 6/69 CB750 sales brochure. Honda makes candy gold official beginning with frame number: CB750-1019210 and publishes it as color code CQ.

In 1970 Candy gold (CQ) was also used on the following models:

CB100 K0
CB175 K4
CB350 K2
CB450 K3

Here’s what an original CQ color sample looks like:

The candy gold prototype in London from 1969 (shown above) actually had a white stripe, just like CB450's that year. As for difference between 1970/71 candy gold on CB750's and the 1971 starlight gold on CB500's, looks exactly the same to me.

Johnie your candy gold looks a bit orange to me when compared to the other photos...maybe its just the photos or my bad eyes!

Yah, I could not get the lighting correct on it. It looks a bit darker in the pics than it actually is too. Here is another pic when I got it back from the painter and even a different color here.  :D Maybe because they were taken inside? I have the same problem trying to get a good pic of the sunflake orange.

The tank looks more copper in that pic but it could be the light and/or the amount of flake or silver basecoat?

Does anyone know if candy gold CQ-Y2C is the same color as the candy gold sold at vintage honda paint? They list using candy gold hc-16-600 top coat with uc-16-100 candy silver base that they sell.

I always wanted a new tank for my old candy gold CB750. My bike was pretty clean original paint. When I finally got a nos tank, it was very disappointing, it was so much darker it wasn't even close. Fresh candy gold is a horse of a different color.

I guess since we are into the Gold here is a pic of one of my favorite 750's,original paint K1. Got it from the original owners family and he kept it up pretty well. Vroom Vroom
