'junk mail' pissed off or a new look?
« on: January 05, 2012, 02:07:22 AM »
I have heard about people who have had junk mail sent to themselves on purpose, and used it to heat their homes. It comes one way or the other , and  for some reason I like the idea that solicitors will keep the [our 'US' postal service] post office in business.  Still today not everyone has e-mail and pop ups where they can be bombarded by the  pernacious salesmen of products, and so we all get it.

I once knew a glom of hipsters who in fact moved into a house and commissiond me to have as muck junk mail sent to them as possible to establish themself as 'the hendersons.'  Art tests, hearing aids, class action lawsuits, any 1-800 number that offered free information by mail, I was on the phone for them, and when they got it it was celebratory.

But now , lets  forward to the modern day, some 20+  years later. I recieved a couple of honda seats in the mail yesterday, and have had boxes dropped on the porch regularyl for the last several months. They are filled with ,,, well, for loss of other words, JUNK!  It is still celebratory.

When reading one of Fiddy's posts, you should always check the time stamp.  Very few made between the hours of midnight and 4am make much sense. ;D ;D

I know I shouldn't try to interpret but I am thinking they used junk mail as packing material?? Surely the seats themselves couldn't have been the junk (I don't think) or perhaps like my entire High School language classes I have missed the symbolism here!

Nope. Sorry. While my flebay treasures may indeed be junk coming through the mail, I haven't started calling such shipments "junk mail".

Okay,  I know that I'm not the only one having a hard time trying to figure out this thread but, the way I understand it , the hipsters were happy to heat the house with junk mail,  and now  ,20 years later,  as thanks  for the junk mail,   now you are heating your house with old Honda seats which they are happy to drop off on your porch on a  regular basis. One  question, Do they mail it to your porch or drop them off in person?

We're not allowed to heat our houses with clean timber any more.  The Pollution police come a Knockin'......
Hate to think how big a fine would be levied if we were to burn old Honda seats.
Would love to try it....  It's cold up here..!!

"junk mail" is that kind of mail you receive that serves for no other purpose than to be thrown away, or burn to at least get some use of it.

I think his point is that, sometimes we buy parts for our bikes, that even when we look at it as "rusty gold" as the "american pickers" would say-, it is nothing more than junk. And now that conventional junk mail doesn't exist as it used to do, our buying junk is probably the modern-day equivalent to "junk mail".

I step forward on this. Many times I've bought parts that were nothing more than junk. I remember specially one seat. The pan was rusted through and the cover was ripped in many places, but I wanted it because it still kept the original contour, so I could replicate it. But it crumbled on my hands, lots of rusty flakes and foam falling down. I couldn't stop thinking what was wrong with me, paying money for that junk.

Heating your house with junk mail is a nice thought problem is they put too much clay in the paper and it doesn't burn well, also leaves a lot of ash.

True, but if I passed in June, I would be pretty ripe by October.  Unless stored in the deep freeze.

Glossy junk mail is no good for burning.   :)
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.
