Did the Grumman see any action in WW2?

F7F saw photo recon missions over Japan, according to one squadron pilot's memory.  They were unarmed.  I don't believe they fired any shots in anger until the Korean war though, two enlisted Marine pilots in an F7F-3 awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for destroying an entire enemy road convoy on a single mission.

They were too large to operate routinely from aircraft carriers until the Midway class went in to service such as the Coral Sea.  They were still deemed "too heavy" for routine carrier duty and most were operated by the Marines from land based operations.  Max range was 1900 miles.

For sure not a Douglas Skyraider. Who are you quoting?

But, on further investigation, I think you are right.   It seems the site is mostly fiction.  I can't corroborate much of anything in it.  I'll remove the quote.  Thanks.
