Replacement Rear Shocks Recommendation?
« on: January 03, 2012, 09:20:16 AM »
Howdy gents,
Got my 71 worked down to paint the frame and planning on replacing the old rusted rear shocks. Done some searches here and also found a couple online. Looking for replacements with chrome springs at least and found a Z1(over 300 with springs) and then also at vintagecb750.com & cb750supply.com, which seem the same(89). Looking for stock length as well. Any other recommendations? Read Ikons are good, but don't think they are made anymore....also would like to keep it under 200 if possible.

Thanks in advance for any help, reviews or insight!

Hagon and Ikon  are around the same price .
http://www.davequinnmotorcycles.com/
For Hagon .
http://www.ikonsuspension.com/content/international_distributors.shtml#ikon-usa
For Ikon's US distributors list .
http://www.worksperformance.com/html/street.html
These are more expensive .
I've heard Ohlins have something that will fit as well .
Ebay have some cheaper over seas products .
I use Ikons 7610 series and I'm happy with them . They cost about $300 as I remember .

The Progressive 12 series has been a go to shock for decades.
http://www.progressivesuspension.com/metric/12_13_14/index.html

Unlike the Icons, Progressive puts the spring on right side up.  ;)  About $300 with springs. Blk is a little less, or Chrome for a little more.

No dog in this fight, I'd be interested in hearing comparison viewpoints on the Progressive v Ikon (Koni) v Hagon.

Seems the price points are <$100, not worth having; Quite a choice at $300, a few above $300 but not enough added value for the money.  Not much I've seen in the $200 range. Maybe find some good used ones.

Thanks MCRider! Found the specific part number for the Ikons, 7610-1296. From their site it's only black with black springs. Looks like I might have to spend more money than I wanted to, not that I don't want to....just on a budget....that's funny right? Haven't read much on Progression shocks, will need to know to dig into them....found some threads with Ikon Vs Hagon, seems more seem to like Ikon better from what I found and read so far. Thanks gents, keep em coming if you have any experience or more options. Thanks again!

I purchased the YSS shocks- very quality units, but run in the 300$ range.

I like a shock that I can rebuild when it is time to, that is why I went with the Ikons.

I definitely agree with you there. Out of the list Hagon, Progressive, Ikon, etc..... is Ikon the only ones you can rebuild? Thanks for all the feedback!

Hagon has recently come out with a new stainless "Nitro" line that are rebuildable. They're pricey though and may not be available with the bottom clevis mount. For popular choices for vintage Hondas in the $300 range you got Progressive, Hagon, or Ikon (which are close copies of the classic 7610 Koni shocks.) Keep a look out on Ebay, I just picked up a set of vintage aluminum Koni's for 50 bucks (guy had them listed for the GL1000  8)). Scratch around before you decide to buy new. Whatever you do just don't buy some chinese junk, and preferably some shocks that are rebuildable...

Ikon is Koni so they are not really copies...... ;)
