Suzuki GSXR250 the jigsaw begins!
« on: January 05, 2012, 06:22:08 PM »
So I stripped my son's latest "barn find" down to the frame and while the engine is a minter the frame was sadly covered in surface rust. My son is in charge of bodywork so he rattle canned the frame and other silver bits. Now finally I can start reconstructing the beast (if I can only remember where everything goes). :-\  Strangely enough even though I have successfully forgotten wedding anniversaries, both my kids birthdays (and on occassion my own) I never ever forget where a part goes or where in the shed it is, bet most of you are like that on here, must be a hangover from our evolutionary caveman days. ;) So amazingly this collection of bolts and parts will once reassembled be quicker than my 1400 over a quarter mile...dang that's hard to take! But the first bits are going on, have added the swing arm to the frame and the side stand. Reassembly may now grind to a halt as I await freshly painted black bits like triple tree, battery box etc. The whole lot will come to a stop once we hit tires as my boy is getting married and he doesn't want to side track any more $$ into the bike until he has recovered financially from the big day. In the mean time I shall piddle about with various things that I can until my holidays run out.....don't ya just love a jigsaw? ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Can't wait to see it starting to come together.

HUGE fan of the old 250cc 4 cylinder screamers.

More bits turned up yesterday from son who is painting them as I remove them. Can't do much with frame until forks have the new seals put in (a job I would normally do but these little jappers require special tools) but bike starting to look like a machine again. :)

Hush,
With all those high tech little 250 sportbikes you're doing,do you have an easy way to pick up factory service manuals for each one? and then do you resell the bikes to guys that want a nice restored little sportbike ? NICE projects ;), & if I was in your neighborhood I'd be up for one of your specials myself ;D.

Actually I have found Einyodler (sic) has most of what I need off this site, where I cannot get a 250 manual the 400 usually works because the Japs used pretty much all the parts just upgraded the size of motors.
I'll ride these around the block once when I finish them, that's about as far as a 54 year old guy should be hunched over the controls of a bike hence the new Suzuki cruiser that lives in my garage these days. ;)

Suzuki GSXR250 coming back together
« Reply #6 on: January 15, 2012, 06:46:32 PM »
Alright last time you tuned in our intrepid bike rebuilders had stripped the GSXR down to it's frame, now painted silver and the engine side covers also gleaming shiny black it was time to add the alloy swing arm and wrestle the little 4 cylinder motor back into it's frame.
If I could only remember where everything went? ;)

Do you enjoy the "twisties" on some of those little sport bikes you're restoring :)??

Ha ha no way, I hate these little sporties as you call them, for a start I can't get my feet up into the right position for the brake and gear changer, then there is the neck aching hunch over the bars, farings are a PITA to work around.
But I do like rebuilding them and getting it right, this one will be quite a pretty bike when we finish her, maybe my boy will keep her long enough to get his full bike licence (max 250cc for learners). ;D

Yes :)...I imagine that the GSXR model especially must have quite a "severe" riding position;seems best suited for track use.

It sounds like a cat that has got it's paw stuck in a sewing machine but there is so much to love about this little engine, it's easy to work on (apart from putting the aif filters back on) >:( and the quickness over short distances is breathtaking for a 250!
I believe the engine is very low K's as it has sat for a long time in sheds being neglected.
Pulls great wheelstands in my driveway and that was before we found some brakes for it. ;D

Too bad it's hard to find small inline fours here, other than a couple of ZXR 400's.
Would be fun to mess around with a little screamer like that  8)

OK this bike is slowly (very slowly) coming together, son dropped off the front and rear wheels with new tires fitted, front got a Pirelli the back got a Ronaldi (never seen one but at $105 fitted who cares).
Reassembled the back end, chain on, aligned rear wheel, starting to look like a real bike again.
Forks are the hold up now, I cleaned them and undercoated for painting when son decided to strip and polish then clear coat! :o
Can't do much until they arrive back, have to rebuild the handlebars on them and 90% of the electrics so pause time again. :)
Will go watch the next 6 episodes of Sons of Anarchy while I wait. ;D

I take it they are 4 valve pots. That must be easy to work on.  :-\
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Motor is mint, getting air filter rubbers over the shared carb ends is worse than a SOHC4 even with the tank off and easy access they refuse to go quietly.
I'm not touching the motor, just tidying up the frame and fairings, I think this one is already sold, next one is in storage awaiting me. ;D

« Reply #24 on: April 02, 2012, 10:48:50 PM »
Just to make myself feel a bit better about not getting much done on the GSXR250 I decided to take some photos of what I jokingly call progress. I had the whole rear end on, the chain set and all, then when I went to put the chain guard the small alloy bracket on the alloy swingarm was missing? Luckily (or unluckily) we had a spare swingarm with the offending tag still attached, so I had to remove the rear wheel/swingarm/monoshock etc !! >:(
In the meantime the front forks finally arrived from having the new seals and all shiny from being polished. It has been so long since I took the bike apart that unfortunately I cannot remember how the handlebars go on so will have to research it some.
Somewhere in the shed is a large blue cover under which is a neglected 1400 Suzuki which is sulking since it hasn't seen any road for two weeks, darn weather here sucks, seems we went from spring to autumn and somehow missed summer altogether!!! :(
