Barber and Daytona October 2012

Info needed, does any one know which classes we could race our Honda 500/4s at the Barber and Daytona
races in October 2012 ???

I'm not an AHMRA guy but I believe you would race in the Formula 500 class. A friend of mine that races a CB550 in the VRRA was at Barber last fall and raced both the Formula 500 and Formula Vintage (in with 750's)

This sounds great Colin, I was thinking to make both races this fall too. For 2012 they are are back to back weekends.

Hi Andy, i rang that company today, and they said that they mainly bring in bikes and cars from the USA. The guy said it was about £750 English pounds one way from the USA. He said he did not have much call for return trips, but put me on to another company, i have not spoke to them yet.
Which brings me on to my next point........ If any one from over the POND wants to bring any bikes over  for racing or touring and need any where to stay in England, theres always space at our place, there is space to put your bike or bikes, and if you fancy coming over in a large group to race, we can help you all out.
If you need any help or info about racing over here just PM me. We have a guy from Calafornia who races with us on a regular basis, he has bought a 350 Honda K4 Twin, leaves it here and just flys in and out to race.... it dont get any better, there you are BRENT thats got your mind ticking over. Same for all Italian racers, infact every one !!!!!!

If shipping in and out of Newark, NYC, or Philly is in the cards, I can handle local transportation for bikes and crew.  I have 3 spare bedrooms and plenty of couch space for as long as you need.  There is enough garage space for all the bikes and gear you could bring.  I'm not sure what I can do regarding the trip south and back with the bikes though.  Perhaps I can arrange the use of a 20ft enclosed car trailer for the time you are all here.

Alex and Col, if you manage to get over, just after Barber you'll have the Manufacurers Cup drag races at Valdosta, let's see how quick they are in a straight line, there's classes for all bikes. ;D

I would like to see some Europeans running here as some of their HP #'s seem big. The real test I'd say.

Colin, maybe you already run with one, but if not you'll need an oil containment pan. (belly pan)

Thanks for the offer of a place to stay, and in case I haven't already mentioned it, I will certainly offer you or anyone else the same. I'm a long way from Barber or Daytona, but hell will have to freeze over for me not to drive to Mosport in 012 in case you plan on that.  ;)

Thanks for the shipping info which Ill be needing again in the future. Last time I paid $700 from NJ to Southampton in 2002. Rode the bike back to Oxford after paying the port fees. The return trip (via Wallenus Wilhelm Shipping Co.) in 2003 wasnt so much more. Port fees were around 100 pounds in Southampton I seem to recall. Maybe I paid 700 pounds coming back. Sounds familiar. Anyway this was for the CB750K4 and it was all very professional - roll-on-roll- off. I took the bus/train from Boston to Port Elizabeth and picked the bike up at dockside (after proving to US Customs that the bike was mine) and rode home to Boston (on the return from the UK).

I don't doubt the costs, but that seems like crazy money.  Five years ago a 40' refer container of apples from here to the UK cost around $800.

Hi Andy, it cost me about £600 Newark(NY) to Thamesport(London) that included all port & custom fees + VAT.

I went to Wallenus Wilhelm Shipping Co. office in NJ and they didn't really want to deal directly with me, asking me to contact a US shipping agent they recommended, I would then have to arrange my own agent in the UK. I spoke to the US agent whose quote wasn't much cheaper than Kingstown, I then had to find a UK agent and the cost of custom fees to add.

A better idea maybe to buy or rent a small container to ship them in, not sure how customs fees would work if the bikes are not being imported and to be returned after a short time.

My wife's friend and a group shipped their road bikes over to Florida for Daytona Week and a touring holiday a few years ago in a container, I can find out details from them if it helps.

Would love to incorporate the US in our 2012 endevours but with us returning to the Manx GP (its been over 30yrs since a Darvill bike roared around this fair Isle) unless some money fairy graces our workshop we will have to continue to dream about it.
However 2013 hasn't yet been decided so you never know...!
