trouble with exhaust gaskets
« on: January 04, 2012, 06:14:29 AM »
Has anybody used this type of exhaust gasket: http://www.ebay.com/itm/72-78-HONDA-CB350F-CB400F-4-cyl-EXHAUST-GASKETS-set-4-/160665398543?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item2568676d0f

I tried to install them last night on my cb400f and they wouldn't quite fit.  They distorted badly when I tried tapping them in with a correctly-sized socket.  I ended up having to hold off on installing the pipes while I order new gaskets.  GRRRR!

Maybe a silly question, but are you certain you pulled the old gaskets out?  SOME people......ahem.......have made that mistake before.   :o

Haha, yep, I had removed them.  And the ports were spic 'n span as the head just got back from Mike Reick's shop.

Personally I like the copper ring type best.  They are a one time use, but seem to seal really well.

+1, and IMHO, they are all one time use.  They should fit right in there, so I'm assuming you received the wrong sized ones - possibly 500/550 sized ones.

I contacted the seller and he said that he's been selling those for years with only one other person (with a 350f) who let him know he had a problem.  I bought them back in September but he still issued a full refund without me having to send them back, so good on him.  I think that the sloppy metal joints where they were brazed together caused some uneven interference.

Anyhow, I should have Honda gaskets coming in this afternoon, so countdown to first start-up has commenced...  T-minus 10 hours!

had the same problem as you (bought them for my 350). Problem was I bought them but didn't try installing them till many months later so I couldn't get a refund. I remember being pretty pissed at the time. Ended up going with oem gaskets.

Yeah I was lucky I got a refund.  I put in the OEM gaskets last night and they worked great.  And the refund helped pay for a new cheapo ignition switch to replace the last cheapo ignition switch which just fell apart on me for no good reason (other than being cheap).  Gotta love Emgo!
