« on: May 23, 2006, 08:05:57 PM »
would love to replace my coil wires as there old and cracking but no leeks so far . What I see is that they are well like molded in to the coil any way to change them besides getting replacement coils?

NGK sells wire splicers which allow you to snip off most of the old cracked wires (assuming they're not cracked all the way to the coils) and add in new high tension wire to the caps and then the plugs. If I remember correctly there was a post about this subject you could do a search for.

I bought some splicers but never used them after solving my problem by cutting a  1/4" off of the end of my #4 wire to reconnect it to the cap. I'm savingn them for a rainy day cause I haven't got much slack in my #4 wire anymore. (just enough ;))

If you need to get new coils, you may be able to pick some up used on e-bay or even loudfastandugly.com in their grab bag of parts. . The consensu seams to be they don't go bad easily, except for the wires cracking, I guess.

I had cracked plug leads on the "rat" & simply cut them off close to the coils.

Buy some (wire) spark plug lead from an auto parts place, bare the ends of both wires & solder them together.

Coat the resulting joint with silastic & when it's dry cover the join with heat shrink.

I had the same prob.  I farted around and eventually machined the plastic off a coil off my 550.  I got lucky and did not machine the area the wire was soldered to.  I pulled old wires, re drilled a hole for the wires and re soldered new wires.  It is kinda hillbilly but it worked.  I am using that one coil on my 63 honda dream right now until I locate a coil for it. I am going to buy some dyna coils for my 550 though.  I am saving and taking donations for the coils so if anyone wants to donate to a very good cause?

Go to partsnmore.com and get new coils. You can get 750 replacements or 900 which has replaceable wires. the 900 coils will have a hotter spark. The are between 26 and 35 buck each. I have had good luck with partsnmore.

I did like Phaedrus did....CB900 coils (purchased thru EBAY, $14.95), then purchased bulk plug wire ($1 per 2 feet) thru my local Honda dealer with new caps and plugs....the old girl is running better than ever. I also open the plug gap to .028, because of the hotter spark.

this sounds more like the rout i am going to take . also get some accel 8.8 wires and bingo.

I did read in one of the older post about drilling out the old and forcing new in then, poxing them in. any one done that and how did it work or hold up if you have

I believe when I wrote them at dyna , sometime ago, they said that the dc1-1 or dc3-1?  coil will work.  I do not have the info any more.  so I am not exactly positive.
