Paint or Powdercoat?
« on: January 18, 2012, 07:13:44 PM »
So I have finally gotten a garage to work/store my bikes in. I want to do the CB550 right, not a factory restore, but a nice redo on it, down to the frame, and build it back up, with nice clean, painted and or powdercoated parts. Is it worth it to powdercoat the frame? or will I end up being unhappy with it at the first chip?

Oh yes! Powder coat that frame, you will be happy.  Powder coat is very tough & does not easily chip, 2 years on mine & not a mark.  ;D

Brando- I recently did a frame swap on a 78 550K for chicken550 of the BAVR forum. she used Melrose Metal Finishing in the East Bay. Around $200, and the gloss black she chose was gorgeous. The finish was stunning- no evidence of bad prep work, they plugged or masked every single threaded or machined hole, and delicately removed and returned the VIN tag. I'd recommend at least calling them for comparison.

For a frame I say powdercoat every time.  Its much more durable than paint and most places have very good color selection.  People worry about repairing chips in PC as if painted frames did not get chipped or as if there would be much difference in how you'd repair a chip in either one.  There's just a lot less chance you're going to chip the PCed frame in the first place.
