K6 Valve Adjust Befuddle - After Cam Install - Help!
« on: January 10, 2012, 05:37:59 PM »
the engine's out and have just re-installed the cam on my K6, but am having trouble adjusting the valves.  it seems all would be well if the cam slot were 180 degrees out, but that’s not right.  total confusion. :o  it’s complicated, but here we go:

I have the 1.4 “T” mark aligned with the index lines, and the cam key slot pointing up.

according to the Honda service manual, “the #1 cam should be in the overlap position and the base circle of #4 cam should be toward the top”.  I am referred to a pic, and the lobes of #1 cam are pointing up while the lobes of #4 cam point down.  my alignment matches the pic, and I think match the description.  I then mounted the sprocket, double-checking that the hor alignment lines are correct.

according to the accompanying chart, I should be able to adjust the valves on #1 (intake and exhaust), #2 (exhaust) and #3 (intake).  trouble is, rockers on #2 and #3 are tight against the cam lobe with adjusting screws all the way out.

rotating the crankshaft 360 degrees (the cam slot is now facing down),  I should be able to adjust the valves on #2 (intake), #3 (exhaust) and #4 (intake/exhaust).  in this position, rockers are against the lobes on #2  and #3.

if I align the 1.4T mark with the index lines but have the cam slot pointed down, all rockers are not touching the lobes.

I don’t think I understand what’s going on.

It doesn’t seem right that the “#1 cam should be in the overlap position” when the valves are adjusted because just a slight rotation of the cam will throw the adjustment off.  shouldn’t the valves be adjusted when the lobes are pointed down (base circle toward the top)?

also, if i were to set up the valve clearances per the manual (#1 at TDC of compression with lobes pointing up) this means a slight clockwise rotation of the cam will open the intake valve and close the exhaust valve. shouldn't both valves be closed during the next cycle (power stroke)?

I can't reply directly to your post, too much going on. But this may help.

As you are turning the crank, watch #1 intake. It should go down and then back up. When it stops going up, begin looking at your timing marks for 1-4T. When you hit it stop. Now you have #1 oon TDCC(compression). You can adjust both on #1, Ex on #2 and IN on #3.

Turn the crank 360° and set both on #4, Ex on #3 and IN on #2.

Anything else, you just aren't paying attention, or you're paying too much attention.   ;)   Its easy peasy. Don't overthink it.

thx for the quick reply!

i watched #1 intake as i rotated the crankshaft clockwise.  it goes down, then up, then stops.  i continue turning the crankshaft and see the 1.4 timing mark show up.  the keyed slot is pointing down, but all valves can be checked.  i can rotate the crank another 360 degrees and the remaining valves can be checked per the manual.  i can now watch the 4 cycles, and they make sense.

thx!
