new addition to the family, feeling better about the 750
« on: January 10, 2012, 07:53:59 PM »
First off I would like to thank a few members here on the site for their knowledge and insight.... MikeKato for checking over the pics of my newly acquired bike. Stev-o for all his help the past few months with everything, Ekpent for for also helping out the past month and a half on numerous bike purchases as well, Johnie for the help yesterday and of course GreenJeans. He gave me the idea to post my ad looking for the bike.

I started posting ads on CL looking for a 750. Mid November I was contacted by a guy who had a 71 750. I responded stating I was interested and didn't hear back from him for a week plus. This was after I decided to email him once more.

He contacted me a few days before the end of November to see the bike. I tried to set it up for the weekend which we both agreed upon and didnt hear from him when I was set to check the bike out. No responses and I thought the bike ad was a fraud. My logic behind this was I kept getting my ads flagged and removed from CL.

Well, December went by and I kept reposting my ads. Flags kept coming and people with dumbass emails would contact my listing. I thought the guy emailed me to have me stop posting. To side track my hunt. Well last week I missed out on a 71 750 that lasted a mere hour on CL... So I thought WTF, why not send the guy a text who emailed me about his K1.

Well he responded and apologized for not getting back to me. Guy was really polite about it all and said I could stop by this past weekend. The kids had wrestling tournies so my time was limited. Luckily for me Sundays tourney ended early and I was able to check out the 750.

From what I could tell bike looked great. She has power. all lights function... Came with relatively newer tires and a maintenance free gel battery. Needs carbs cleaning, turn signals and a kick stand and the 4-4 pipes... In due time of course.... Got to finish my other build first....

I told him I would take the bike and I finally picked the 750 up today....
First few pics are from Sunday and the ones with #$%*ty picture clarity are from an hour ago.....

that looks great!  Is that a Kerker on there? Looks like it could use a head gasket but that ain't gonna stop you from running/riding just fine if you can stand the mess.  Also, I would try to do something about where the paint is failing by the gas cap.  If gas/fumes continue to get under the paint there, it will ruin the paint on the rest of the tank...all in all, great find
If it works good, it looks good...

yeah I was wondering how I could fix the paint but I was thinking in time I would have it repainted. The head gasket does need to be replaced... And yes to the exhaust being a Kerker. I will be pulling out the steel wool tomorrow to the chrome.. Anyone have a kickstand for a k1 not being used?

Bad thing about the 750 is that you have to pull the motor to get the head off [unless it has a frame kit]

I would take a sharp razor blade and cut off the delaminated part, sand the paint edge with about 600grit, clean, and cover the edge with gas proof epoxy...

Way to go Tews you got you a CB750 ;D You going to love it and I know your excited about it. By you pics looks to be in decent shape, like most of these old Honda's just needs some TLC. Was the bike near you? Have any history or info on it? Was the PO the original owner, if not how long did he have it. Once again just shows the bikes are still out there. Did you get a good deal on it?

Good luck with it and keep us posted

Congrats on the 750!! I like that color. Whenever I get the K6 running I'll have to ride down by you and see it sometime.

Wow. I can't believe you got it for $800.  Over here you would pay probably $3500.  I'm partial to the k1 but always looking for a K0.

Can't find anything wrong with that bike and it looks to be in fantastic shape.  I guess you can only guess if the mileage is correct by the amount of wear on the bike etc. Does it seem to you like it had a partial restoration?

Unfortunately I was looking at the pitting/rust on the rims and they kinda bad. Did the steel wool and not much luck. But I did notice the tires are tubeless. How can this be?????

I think I will pull the carbs this week and clean them.

The rims have what we call patina. See how they look with a little Turtle Wax,my favorite. My Dad used to put that stuff on everthing even new appliances etc.
That screw by the throttle is like a throttle stop, maybe poor man's cruise control.I have never messed with them but I think in theory raising the screw would create a friction point.
Have you drooped a carb bowl to take a sneak peek yet. Gotta love those clips instead of screws. Also you can run a tube in a tubeless tire.

Those valves look like tube valves to me.. ;)   Silver was a Japan only color, if that paint is original it may be an import. Very nice bike and excellent for the money..... wish i could find them for that kinda money... :o

I'll put in my two cents. I think the bike looks great. One of the first with lower bars that I really think fits the machine. Looks like a keeper to me!

Tews - just to ne sure you understand, the tire can be used tubeless, but not with spoked rims, there is a tube in there.
And on the thumbscrew on the throttle, some guys also use it to hold the idle a little high when cold, but not worth the trouble IMO. Again, congrats!

Ahh. I thought it would have a tube inside since it is a spoke wheel. The writing on he tire is what threw me for a loop.

I thought I've seen a few of those on the Net that came with those colors stock. Would be worth looking into.

The 'tubless' on the tires means they can be run without tubes, not that they are. 99.9% of the time wire wheels = a tire with a tube motorcycle or car.

My wire wheel MGB GT uses tubes.
