Oh, and really sweet bike. You have quite the gift for finding clean SOHC's cheap.

Hey Bankerdanny, long time since I've seen you on here. How is the Goldwing coming along?

Those valves look like tube valves to me.. ;)   Silver was a Japan only color, if that paint is original it may be an import. Very nice bike and excellent for the money..... wish i could find them for that kinda money... :o

As far as I can tell the paint used to be the brown. The paint near the gas cap is peeling. I started to remove it as suggested and and its brown.

Those rims look fine to me. Great looking bike and an excellent bike. If you decide not to keep it Ill gladly take it off your hands ;)

Good luck with it
Andy

I will definately be keeping this one. Almost two months trying to find a time with the PO to look at it has enough work..Plus I am becoming a hoarder of CB's.. Kinda

Nick,

It's hibernating at the moment down at my sisters. I have been accumulating some parts though, new fork seals and the tapered headset bearing conversion.

I figure I will move it over to the heated side of the garage and pull the front end apart at the end of February so it is all ready to just ride and enjoy by late March.

Lately my time has been spent on the MG I picked up last month.

Once it warms up we will have to get together for a ride.

Pulled the float bowls and they aren't that bad. Gas and stabilizer smell rancid though.

Good to see it has the elusive plastic chain guard and it looks in great shape.  They are hard to find especially in that condition.

When you get to the carbs be sure to give those brass floats a good shake by your ear to see if you can hear any rattling inside or feel anything sloshing around. They can get a little weak with age and have been know to develop pinholes. I replaced all 4 with plastic in one project and had to replace a single unit in another, fell apart in my hand. Good to see them though as it shows they are original to your year. Be curious to see if it has #120 main jets.

I bought my bike and did not want to get sidetracked with it until I got my 550 build complete. I started to piece the 550 together but had to admire the bike. Well admiration has now turned to disgust.. .............

Do you have the pieces to fill in the gaps? This is not an area that needs to be oil tight (although it does need to be pretty water tight) so you have a few options to repair it.

No, i posted the pic of the sheet metal cuz it was covered by it. I looked over the bike but i guess not that well. I had no idea it was even on there because it blended really well. I removed the cover, then the sheet metal and my heart dropped....

While it certainly doesnt look good, I would not say that it is toast. A good welder could repair it.

It was probably laid down years ago and the case broke. Seen it many times.  Probably the owner replaced broken t/s, bent bars and maybe even exhaust but patched the case rather than replace.  No big deal except for the possibilty of water entering.  I good body man/welder could possibly give it a decent repair.  Nice find even with that...Larry

Ah, that's what that was. Well, you might be able to form filler pieces using JB Weld. It's not structural and with some care and sanding you should be able to fill it in and get a pretty good seal. I would be annoyed that the seller hid that on you, but I don't think that you need to replace the case.

Seal that piece of sheet metal up with a little RTV to keep the water out and forget about it for the moment.
It does suck but it's not fatal.
You still got a hell of a deal! :)

I've paid a lot more and found way worse after the fact..... :(

Hopefully someone will chime in with a junk lower case that they can Dremmel off a donor piece for you to trim, sand and fit. JB weld it in.

Lucky its only the one case, not both. I would try JB weld first.. on that thicker part, try to drill and tap for a tiny machine screw (head can be cut off). This will anchor the JB weld to the case, even if it lt go, it will stay in place.

I'd go to a good welder if I had that donor part other wise I'd try the jb weld. I'd still have bought it Tews19 even seeing that first. ;)

I've seen worse get fixed, find yourself a good welder and you'll be all set. I'm lucky enough to have one of the best welders in the area as a neighbor, i take all my aluminum to him, when it comes back, you can't even tell there was a repair. Too bad you weren't closer to buffalo, I'd hook ya up with him.  great score, don't let the damage discourage you.

Thanks all for the input. I think I may tap into the outside lip and run a few bar link pieces, form a mold from JB weld and then sand down and smooth out.  I will post updates when I do this. As for now she waits underneath my work bench with my 550k.

+1 on still buying it if I knew it had that damage.

PS. I would get rid of that red toro thing and you'd have room for another bike!

Personaly I find nothing wrong with the repair, as long as you seal it up with RVT.

But then i'm not interested in every detail being perfect.

Tews, just ran across this thread. I know your heart sank when you found this :( But like already has been discussed there is a number of ways it can be repair so I think you will be OK ;D So don't beat yourself up for not catching that before hand. I've been lucky with my 2 750's, no hidden suprises, but other members here haven't been that lucky and have found stuff a lot worse than what you have. By your pics your K1 looks to be a good solid bike and the $$ you paid for it makes it even better. You did good and you be riding it soon !!

Tews, member JimF does awesome welding and micro welding, if you can find a trashed lower case {someone here has to have one} then a piece could be welded in there easily...
