I finaly have gotten the 650 to run well enough that I could nurse it down the dirt road I live on.

I was cruzeing along at 3ooorpm, getting the feel for a bike this big( only ridden lightweights before), I decided to just crack the throttle open a bit.
Wham, the forks unloaded and before I know it it's nearing 7 grand and just keeps pulling, only took Just a fraction of a second.
It's not even running well and it's allready accelerates faster than anything i've ridden or driven.

Kinda scared to be starting out on this as my road bike. I wish I could find a smaller bike to start on, but they are $$$$ around here, it's the big super sports bikes that are cheap.

Anyone else start with one of the big Cb's as there first road bike. I know it sounds chicken**** buttttt i'm worried my skills might not be up to it. $:-\$

If you are worried then ride it slowly, most newer 400's are faster that the old Honda's. I was 16 when i bought my first 750, it had a 850 kit and went very well, i rode it slowly until i was familiar with how it handled and more importantly, how well it stopped.. Most bikes "feel" fast on dirt roads.....

yep, just take it easy for a while...just a thought but, try doing posted speed limits ...on pavement...that bike should be comfy and stable at 55mph ...on pavement...I used to love ripping down dirt roads on my cb360, got a 750?...not so much

you are the one in charge of the throttle. take it easy and get used to it.

Take it steady until you get to know the machine and the machine knows you. (So to speak)
Once you know your own and the bikes limitations, it'll all be good.

My first bike was an XS650 and I had NEVER ridden one before and I rode it home from the dealer.

It seemed huge and intimidating for about a week or two and then I was wondering what all the fuss was about. Two months later I was halfway across the country on my first road trip.

I never wished for a smaller bike. Just take it easy and don't crack open the throttle on dirt roads and don't worry about how fast it can go. You need to get a little time under your belt on good roads at reasonable speeds.

Ya def take your time.... see if you can take a safety course.... if not get on a nice stretch of open road and take it as fast as you can bear .... when you wanna slow up just pull in the clutch....
I would try to take the bike out on a hundred mile ride... when you get home you will feel a connection with the bike... just take your time and enjoy the ride... the 650 is small by to days standards

I went from an XL175 to a CB750. Big jump and the CB seemed such a "hugh" machine. It was just a matter of riding it within "your limits" and getting the feel of the bikw in different situations and speeds. Dont do anything the scare yourself any more than you already have. "Learn it and love it!!!!!!!"

take your time and learn the bike
650 is a mid size bike and handles pretty good
you'll have alot of fun with it
riding dirt roads also teaches you alot

It's all in the wrist....

CB750K8 was my first street bike... still ridin' the same one twenty-five years later. The advice I remember was to buy a bike that you won't outgrow too soon.

Learn what your bike can do ! Find a stretch of road with a few curves and ride that road as much as possible. The more you ride , you will find that you are cornering quicker and getting comfortable with the bike. At least you were smart and didn't get a crotch rocket to start with. They accelerate faster than a NEW rider can react.
I went from a KZ1000(bored to 1100cc) VERY FAST bike to a Roadstar GEEZER GLIDE(1600cc) a big difference in size and weight , but I've mastered the STAR. Don't be afraid to ride, just use CAUTION when you do!!!

I used to ride a Monster 750 dark, first learned to ride on a cb600r and had a cb350f. The only time I wrecked was on the 350. It is not about the bike so much as the rider and the drivers around you. Ride beyond your skill or comfort level and you will be eating road real fast. Take it from me. I was having rocks scraped out of my entire right side of my body for being stupid.

Also, if possible, find a large, empty parking lot and practice a lot of low speed control. It will help getting you use to the weight and handling faster. Preferably with no sand or debris.

Most people dont practice emergency stops and so when they have an emergency they lock up the rear or the front or both. Practice, practice, practice until it becomes second nature.

No one ever jumped on a bike for the first time and could suddenly ride it well. Takes time and practice. Eventually all that practice will pay off and you will be a better ride and you will enjoy the motorcycle so much more as a result.

how far to the proper black top ashpalt?just cruise till then,in response to other replies here reguarding emergency stops etc,when my rear tire is due to be replaced i practice rear wheel lockups, and sliding left and right with the rear locked up,im a fairly experienced dirt bike rider so it comes naturally but rarely used on the road, so its my way to keep those skills without ruining a tire.

once you get used to cross stearing and holding a bike that heavy up none of the bigger bikes will intimidate you any more my first one I road for almost a year before I was comfortable now I want a bigger one

Sounds like respect, and that's a good thing. As said, take it slowly. A skills course was probably mentioned as well, but I didn't read the whole thread...

in the safety course they taught us to do some slow maneuvering in second because its less twitchy than first...next time u have the balls to try that pull the clutch and click into the next gear

Dirt roads make me nervous id find some real pavement to mess around on

I have less balls than the K0 horses. Sounds weird, I mean there is always power left when I feel it is fast enough. And I am not bantam weight, almost 250 last time I checked.
Respecting the power is not a shame.
