Slip-on mufflers??
« on: June 27, 2006, 03:07:27 PM »
I am looking for a slip-on type muffler that will fit my stock 4-1 header on my cb550F. Looking for a nice throaty loud sound, straight pipes would probably be a bit too loud. ???? Nothing too long, a shorty style would be good.

There's been some threads not too long ago on this.  Try a couple of different searches - they had some makes, models and stores in them.

Try adding "Cherry Bomb" to your search.  Someone, I can't remember who, used a regular utomotive Cherry Bomb pipe on the bike. It looked really geed from the pic.

I had searched earlier but did not find much, I have since searched further and found a little more.  I think I am going to weld up a 2inch slip-on and maybe put a baffle in it.

i made mine (for my cb550F header) with a $15 glass packed slip-in baffle. i took the baffle to a muffler shop, had them bend a piece of 1.5" pipe to my specifications and make the appropriate flange, then pounded the baffle in (it was a very tight fit, so i scotch taped the glass around the baffle, which just burned out later). i had him weld a chromed tip around the end of the pipe for aesthetics. it sounds awesome---throaty describes it well, but it's surprisingly not too loud for a glasspack, and i think it looks much better than the cherry bombs.

total cost incl. labor: $40.

Thanks Paul. Looks about exactly what I am looking to do. Did you use an exhaust clamp to fit it onto the stock header?

yes. i cut a slots in the last inch or so of the flange (like this + if looking from the end), so that it would compress when the clamp tightened down. worked perfect= no leaks, and no gasket necessary.

Moroso has a "cherry bomb" muffler that does NOT use fiberglass and is design with very little back pressure. The inside devides the exhaust path into two parts in a spiral. ($54)

Many glass pack mufflers spew out particles of fiberglass while running. You can see the particles glistening in the sunlight. You will end up breathing that, or have it all around your garage, driveway and neighborhood.

The mufflers that just have a perforated tube inside (many holes), that is straight through may not muffle the sound enough for street use.

Check in with Sean Barney about what is on his bike. I rode ~1200 miles with him during the rally, it sounds really good without being so loud that it will attract the attention of the cops.

Check Johnny5 over in the services offered.  He makes exhaust cans.  Bought one a while back.
