NJ license plate
« on: January 12, 2012, 02:13:46 PM »
I recently bought a 1970's New Jersey motorcycle license plate for my CL175 to give an authentic look at shows. In a corner there is a square sticker with a month and year on it. Is this a renewal date? and is the date linked to the owners birth month as in Florida?

Just to add (at least here in Washington) if you register as vintage you don't need the sticker. '76 was the last year for our green MC plate so i found one from a plate dealer. No more yearly tabs!

It's the registration renewal sticker.  The number and color would tell a cop the month and year your registration expires so he knows to pull you over.

Is the plate tan with black lettering?

Yes it is the tan colour plate. I live in the UK and the bike originally came from New Jersey.
So when would the renewel date be? yearly from the date of original registration, the reason I ask is the sticker on my plate says 'Mar 80', my birthday is in March.
When my daughter lived in Florida she and her husband had to renew registration on thier birthdays.

The March date is coincedence, but nothing more.  That registration expired March 30, 1980.

Coincidence with what?

I realise it expired then but where would that date come from;
- the original registration date
- the month of the owners birth
- some other date

it comes form the original registration date. nj doesnt care about what your birthday is when it comes to registration.

Ha, coincedence with YOUR birthday!

The owner originally registered that bike in March of what ever year (1976, 1979, ???).  If its sold, the renewal date gets reset to the month that new owner first registers it.

Frankly, the whole birthday thing in Florida sounds like a pain. I would get ripped off if I bought a bike a month before my birthday and had to renew 30 days later.
