What's the differance between 76 and 77???
« on: January 13, 2012, 03:07:38 PM »
What's the difference between the 76 and the 77 CB750??? It seem that there is a parts compatibility issue between the years. What changes were made between the two years? Is it in the frame? engine? Electric? The reason I'm asking is that I'm looking at seats and Ive been coming across a 76 cut off and i have a 77. I don't want to drop the dough if it isn't going to work cause something is in the way.

Huge differences between the 76 and 77 model line up mate, you need to specify whether you've got a "K" or an "F" before you can expect any accurate replies though, so which is it? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Okey Dokey. The whole bike is basically different from the K0-K6 models, in that you have a different frame, rear wheel, seat, tank, exhaust system, etc. The engine is different, as the K7/K8 (yours is a K7) used the F0/F1 engine, but with PD carbs like those on the F2. If you're restoring it, you'll need to buy K7 or K8 specific parts, but if you're customising it, you'll need to fab up a lot of stuff, as there's not much compatability between the earlier K's and your bike, including after-market parts. Cheers, Terry. ;D

+1, the K7/K8 is the red headed step child of the CB750 family, good engine but ugly aesthetics. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Hence me wanting to make it look better. Do any of you know if are any good looking cafe seats that will fit? Ive seen 2 and they are ugly. I wish i knew what the frame differences were. If i did then i could just get the seat that i like and  modify the frame to make it fit. Honestly i bet I'm just overthinking it. I'm the frame changes wont make that big of a difference. They would have to be drastic and from everything Ive seen the frame is pretty similar.

The seat on the K7/8 opens the opposite direction form the K6.

The K7&8 also have a little better carburetors, at least they seem to idle better and start more easily because they have acceleration pumps. Although they are not as fast because of increased weight. My K6 outruns my friend's K7 & his K8.

The K7 & 8 where about 1 1/2 inch longer, mostly through extending the front end by increasing the rake angle.

The rear wheel was made smaller and a larger tire installed.

The geometry and tire changes made the bike more stable in a straight line and smoothed the bikes ride a little.

IMHO they are a nice variant, but I like the K6 better.

Redheaded?

I'll keep mine thank you. 69 to 76 is like a Ford Mustang. Everybody has one.

Yes, 1977-78 models are harder to do and parts? There are no parts.

Thanks Mark! Like i had said. i probably am overthinking it. If those are the major changes then I'm sure i can just pic out a seat i like and modify it to work. I'm new to the CB750s and I'm learning as i go!

Ha ha, well if you were there "Back in the day", you'd know that the reason that the K7/8's are so thin on the ground now, is because nobody bought them back then. Some things are rare because they were hand-built in limited numbers, but the K7/K8 is rare because it looks like it was hand formed with an ugly stick! If a K0 - K6 is a Mustang, then a K7/K8 is Honda's Edsel............. ;D

+1 on "until you've owned one"

My "take" on the models was that in the final year, after making the CB750 for ten years, Honda probably had it figured out. Mine has not disappointed. Everyone's entitled to their opinion (especially Terry) but I like the look.  I am not a collector but I am sure that a nice Edsel today brings a very good price.

And I love my K8, it goes like hell and looks like new now.

Parts were an adventure, took a while but eventually I found everything that I needed.

You got a good summary of the K6/K7 differences, nothing I can add. The K7/K8 are almost identical but even between these two there were some differences.

There are lots of parts out there, be patient.

Good luck with your bike and enjoy.

Where did you end up getting most of your parts from? I has been a challenge for oem parts. Im still looking for the bushing that goes into the top of the shocks. I found them on the net and ordered them but is seems they are on backorder.... I wonder if the order is going to be canceled.

Most of the stuff i was is aftermarket. So fitment is allways a consern for me since it seems everyone is making parts up to 76. If i can find a 76 ill get it. Thats the year i was born and the year i wanted originally. So i settled for a 77 thinking there really isnt major changes from year to year on bikes. Guess i was wrong. :P

Did you try a local Honda dealer for that bushing? That's where I got mine. Inexpensive and in stock one day after I ordered.

Most "consumable" parts (spark plugs, gaskets, filters, bushings) came from Honda, some came from a parts bike, some I got from Ebay, some from Craiglist, some from members of this board and a few from specialty websites.

Here is a post that may help you: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=743.0

The K7 and 8's I know were good bikes. The final hurrah for the SOHC4 CB750 before going to the DOHC in 79 :( :( I grew up with the original KO-K6 and loved the design and the stance of that bike. It looked fast just sitting still, they still do ;D No matter how hard I tried I could never make myself like the design change of the 7 and 8. But cookdaddy and all the other owners of them on this forum be proud and hold your head up, because you've got the last of the SOHC4 CB750 the first superbike ;)

Sorry if we got off subject a little.
I would think they share a lot of parts with the F models, I believe I read Honda wasn't going to build the K in 77-78 but low sales of the F and demand for the K got them a two year repreive. These bikes are a lot like old chevys. There are lots of parts interchangability, you just have to figure it out. May require a parts bike at some point if you hit too many brick walls. They are out there waiting for us to find them.

A little friendly teasing between members doesn't mean it's not a great bike either. We all have different taste even among fans of the same bike. Did I leave anyone out?

Oh, back on topic, I too have been able to find pretty much everything needed to keep my 750 K8 running without too much grief. I had almost given up back in the early 90's, before the internet, but once the world wide web brought the four corners of the earth to my doorstep SOHC life has become much easier...

 8)  I have a K0 750 and an F1 750. The 76 F1 has the longer frame like used on all of the 77 and 78 bikes and I think, slightly different trail/rake? I was surprised at the different feel of the two bikes. The early 750 feels smaller and more nimble while the later frame has a heavier longer feel. I know there is a length difference and maybe a small weight difference but I didn't expect the riding sensation to be that much different. I'm looking foreward to summer when I have the K0 running again and I can test them back to back.
