Ever run the Avon AM26?
« on: January 20, 2012, 05:14:26 am »
Has anyone spent any track time on the Avon AM26 Race tire?

to my best knowledge its a really new tire to replace the good old and loved AM20 90/90 front that they no longer produce.

What series do you race in and with what bike?

Sam, are you sure you used the racing compound AM26 and not the street tire? The italian importer keeps telling me they arent available yet... see in the link, no measures yet..

It is true these have replaced the venerable AM20's.

I just installed the AM26 and unfortunately it is nearly 2lbs heavier then the 20. When one tries hard to take & keep weight off this is a piss-off. Better be a damn good tire!

Brent, I can't remember what these tyres are but they were very good in their day and it seems they are still in use today, quite light to boot.

On the red Honda.  http://www.pacre.co.uk/

Yossef, we're getting at cross purporsess, The KR825s on the little Honda were aimed at Brent for a lighter tyre than his AM26s which are 2lb heavier than the AM20s he had been running.

The tyres on the CR were AM something or other with the same tread pattern (I think) as the AM26 and were a race compound. ;D

I'll be running a 75 GT185 Suzuki in the GP200plus class.
Shopping around for tires and figuring out what size rim I need... yaddah yaddah.

neat

dont think that avon has much choice in classic racing tires for lightweights these days. dunlop has the kr 825 and kr124 and kr124 front rear.

Everyone claims the Dunlops are lighter and I'll probably switch to them. I have also heard the Dunlops may not be as good in the wet or in cool conditions.

Maybe not an issue for an old guy....anyone with experience using both Avons & Dunlops?

Sorry to high jack.

the fast blokes over here use an avon front and a dunlop rear .
there was a new compound dunlop at the icgp race at brands last year but people where having trouble getting it to do 10 laps , all the old compound ones where suddenly worth a fortune !

That counts me out Simon !!!! ( the fast blokes use.....) I use the AM26 on the front and its been mint, dry, wet what ever, and with the Honda being a heavy bike with a not so light rider on it, i have no complaints .

nothing wrong with the front avon col , next time you need a rear have a look at the kr145 they do two compounds  [ they change the compound numbers every year but last year they were 523 for the softer one and 801 for the harder ]  go for the softer option i think you might be surprised at the extra grip you get .

I just put the Road Rider 26's on the front and rear of my CB750 cafe bike.
Rear wheel 17inch.
Front is 19 inch and and can be used front OR rear.
so if you had two 19 inch rims it would be set up like a H-D XR750.
The 17 inch rim still has a 26.5 inch OD with tire on.
