What would be a good price for a GL1000 front end
« on: December 30, 2011, 09:45:25 AM »
I found a local guy on another forum that has a 75 GL1000.  He is wanting to get rid of it to make room for some shop equipment.  He knows all I am interested in is the front end and possibly the rear wheel.  He has already told me that he would let the forks go for $50, but I am not sure if that would include everything associated or just the tubes themselves.  He said the front wheel is in pristine condition and coupled with the rear wheel is somewhat valuable.

What would you give for a complete front end and rear wheel?  I don't want to give some BS lowball offer and insult the guy, but I don't want to overpay either.  I have looked on ebay and the like and prices are all over the map.  I like the fact that he is local so I won't have to pay for shipping.

If that is the price for the whole front end that would be good. If he is selling the whole bike I would see about getting it if the price is right, that is the best year if in good shape.

I am hopeful it is for the entire front end minus the wheel.  However, I think it it might just be for the fork legs.  I did some looking on ebay and the forks go from $50-$100+

He was specific that the front wheel would be extra.  I guess I need to go see him and hash out some details.  I was just kind of curious what to offer/counter with.  I don't want to come off as inconsiderate or rude.

I will ask about the whole bike,  I could always part it out and make my money back.

I paid $100 for the whole front end including brakes and triples + both wheels but everything needs to be rebuilt (i.e. brakes, bearings, fork seals, etc) so that is something to consider.  You are gonna at least need the front hub from the gl for brake mounting and also the gl front end is wider...cb hub will not work easily.   The gl hub can then be laced to the wheel of your choice...but that is gonna get pricey too.
If it works good, it looks good...

Early GL hub should be same a 750 front hub that was used till 76... if I remember correct. Rotors are different though, more offset, and maybe same dia as 500-4 rotors..

I talked the guy guy on the phone last night and am planning on going to look at it tomorrow after work.  He told me that the calipers are froze up and will need to be rebuilt.  He wasn't sure if the pistons are good or not, but from the little looking a I did on it last night new pistons don't appear to be cheap.  From what I gather the wheels are the best part of everything.  I will know more tomorrow when I take a gander at everything.

Well I ended up getting the front end and wheels from him for $150.  The wheels are in amazing condition and only one caliper is frozen.  The only thing I can think of that wasn't there was the speedo cable.  Is the cable the same for the CB750 and the GL1000?  I know Bike Bandit lists two different part numbers, but I would think that is because the length is different between the two.

Cable should be the same. I have a 76 GL hub that my 78 K cable fits perfectly. It doesn't matter what side the drive is on, as long as the little tang in the middle of the drive rotates right when the hub is spun. It's not good manufacturing sense to have some speedos driven by clockwise motion, and some by counter clockwise motion. F's have the drive on the opposite side, but they still spin to the right, for example.

A complete front end with tire and rim and all the fixins is worth about $360 but I have bought whole bikes for less than that
