What's up with this gas tank?
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:38:14 PM »
I was looking through ebay and came across this gas tank.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-1978-Honda-CB-750-CB750-Gas-Tank-Late-model-/170764764683?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item27c25f860b#ht_500wt_1398

It's listed as a 69-78 Cb750 tank. It's obviously a 77-78 style tank, but what's up with that second hole for the gas? I've seen gas gauges there but they were built right into the gas cap. Maybe a custom job? Anybody know anything about it. Just curious.
What am I doing and why am I doing it? Those are excellent questions.

Is it a Hondamatic?

See the hose underneath?  There was a coffee cup connected to that at one time and the engine kept it hot.  No insulated cups back then like we have now.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Relocated oil tank for an open triangle maybe?  Wouldn't leave much gas volume but most cafe' bikes aren't for touring anyway.

Dave is correct. The second opening is for the fuel gauge sending unit that was only used on the Hondamatics. The K7's and K8's are stamped at that location, just not cutout. I've got one in very good condition that has the sending unit intact. Could be used on a K7,K8 or F (why in the world would you do THAT to an F) and if you had the gauge (tach I think) from the Hondamatic you'd be set.

Yikes! Where did the hose attach to? Seems like "on the go" to the extreme.
