Lets See what kinda seat's you are running..........
« on: May 24, 2006, 03:14:44 PM »
Hey,

Stuck here at work for another hour  ::) , and was curious to see what kinda different seats the other members are running on their CB's.

I am at the point where I need to do something different to my seat. When I first bought the bike, it had some sorta nasty "mini" king & queen thing, which I soon replaced (thank God) with a stock unit. The stock seat does make the bike look 15 times better, but I need to do something else.

I was gonna go with a solo seat, but that looked like ass (my opinion) , and am now leaning towards a typical "cafe" style fiberglass seatpan, trimmed short to keep the bike "tight" . I plan to cutoff whatever frame sticks out past the back of the seat, for a clean look. Not sure what direction my bike is going on, kinda a "Cafe", kinda a "Bobber" , sorta a "Streetfighter" , and I feel whatever seat I go with will make or brake any of these themes...

So, post some pics guys of what kinda seat you have on your scoot (besides stock), so I can get some ideas..

Here's how the bike sits now, with the stock Honda seat...

Well, you see my seat every time you look at my avatar. At some point I plan on replacing it with the solo seat and CR750 tank from AirTech.

The seat I have now was thrown in with the bike. I just had to figure out how to mount it. It just barely fits two, is rock hard, and I have no idea where it came from. Anyone else ever seen one like it?

Stock and stock.  I would like to have a boat tail style fiberglass seat on the 550, but can't justify the expense right now and I don't really feel like getting into seat design and fiberglass molding.  I really like some of the seats from Glass From the Past.  One of these days! :D

Come on, get out that hammer & make/buy/steal a cafe seat.  You know you want to.  Everyone's doing it.  You won't get to hang with the cool kids unless you do.  Bobbers are so "I'm a dentist".   ;)

Just kidding

At my age it's bad enough being a noob, but sometimes you just can't help it.  Now I certainly know what a cafe is, and a streetfighter is another no-brainer, but what in the frick is a "bobber"?  (Pictures would be appreciated)

BTW ProTeal, nice bike.

heres what I would call a bobber - I think a bobber is just an old bike stripped of all un-necessary hardware to make the bikes lighter.

"Bobber" came from around the 40's.  They'd bob the fenders, cutting them short.  And then, of course, strip it of everything unnecessary, including the front brake.

I've got a seat base from Jorge (550ko) that is like his, that I'm going to finish up and the main difference will be that I not using the same taillight as he did. Jorge's look good but, I'm looking for a different look. I'm looking to put this on my 77' CB550K project. I've got a 78' CB550K that I'll be building later and I'm thinking about that link from 650motorcycles.com, that uses a seat base with the rear portion of a gas tank for the upper rear part of the seat. No pictures yet, sorry.

I've been running a NOS (not any more!) brown vinyl one year only 1976 seat on my 550F.  Scored it on eBay for $50, new in the bag about a year ago.  I've recently bought another seat, which I'm planning on modifying and making into a racing style bump seat, like an old Norton or other.  No fibreglass or metal, just a foam bump covered in vinyl.

The rest of the bike is being trimmed down to match.  I spent the last year getting it back to 100% stock, so now feel it's time to strip off all those nice parts, put them on the shelf, and have some fun with the bike.

hey pro... you've probably seen mine already but for reference, here it is.

stock foam cut down on the stock seat pan with the rear fender removed.  its only got about a half inch of foam on the base so, its not a long distance ride but, i don't think the 350 was ever meant to be in the first place.

I just recoverd the original with a plain cover that I sewed up.  No decorative stiching, since that would let water seep into the foam.

I wanted to flame it so bad, but I knew I would regret it the first time I sat down on it after a rainy day.

I'm running a stock seat pan, but I've had a custom cover made. its a helluva lot shorter than stock and has some pretty cool pleating action on top.

I've taken pics of it with my camera phone, but I'm not sure how to get them on my computer. if you want, PM me your cell phone # and I can pic message it to you

later,
andy

Thanks for all the replies/photo guys, it is a big help.
Also thanks for all the kind words about my CB, it means allot..

I do like the "bump" seats, such as the one like HEFFAY is running. I think I am leaning towards a fiberglass "Cafe" style seatbase, I can cut short to tighten up the bike abit. Thought about mounting the tailight and signals "on" or "in" the back of the seat, but still unsure of that, as I am most everything else dealing with this bike ::) Want to make it as streamlined as possibile. I have made so much progress thus far, I want to be 200% sure I dont ruin it with some seat that I didn't think out well enough.

The solo seat I had (sold on ebay last week) just wasnt gonna work for my goal. Don't get me wrong BEACHPEOPLE, your bike looks killer the way it is setup, but my CB is going in more of a Streetfighter/Bobber/Attitude bike, where yours is way more cruiser than mine will ever be.

Keep the pics/idea comming. You know I love those pics... ;D

Figure I would throw this in here to help wake everyone up.... ;D

I was just wondering what the update was with your bike teal.  I made my own seatpan with sheet metal just because I didn't want to pony up for a cafe style seat just yet.  I used the foam from the stock seat that came with the bike, just gotta get it covered in vinyl.

I like your seat too, Beachpeople. The back end looks like a slightly smoother rise than the ones I usually see - may not make a difference comfortwise, but visually I think it's much cooler.

BTW - this is the most amateurish 'photoshop' job ever (paintbrush actually after a couple of beer) but this is where my bike is headed shortly.  I've mounted drag bars (a little more comfy than clubmans or clipons) and have the new seat for butchering.  Signals on the way too, and a bicycle computer to replace the speedo is mounted.
