Can anyone identify this cb750 exhaust?
« on: January 15, 2012, 09:35:32 AM »
Just figured I'd start a new thread from the Dunstall one I had started. Anyway, went to go check out this bike this morning...The guy told me before I got there that it had Dunstall exhaust, and as you can see by the pics, the muffler has the "Dunstall Power" tag on it. However, I was under the impression Dunstall only did 4-2 systems...

Is this actually a Dunstall system?

Haha, yeah, we finally got some snow up here.

The bike has been sitting out since the 80s, and is somehow in pretty good shape. Apparently the pipes have been on it since the 70s.

Looks like a DOHC 421 sidewinder exhaust with a Dunstall muffler. Cycle X sells them and uses them on SOHC's

Whatever brand it is, it does not look to user friendly as far as getting the oil filter off and on. Got any pics of the bike standing back a little ?. Seems like if it had been sitting outside for example here in Michigan, since the 80's, it would be returning back to the earth from which it was made  :) Did he at least cover it with a tarp ?

Yeah, it was covered with a tarp. The bike itself is in pretty phenomenal shape for sitting outside for as long as it has...besides the fact it was outside, the guy took really good care of it. It's more complete, and in better shape than my K4, so I'm grabbing it.

It's a really cool, old street racer...it looks much worse in the pics than it actually is.

Frank, I'm not sure if it's big bore or not...although I wouldn't be surprised. It's got an electronic ignition, and he told me it had a barnett clutch too...he's giving it to me for a good price, so I can't say no. I'm looking forward to this one.

I dont think its a sidewinder, the collecter looks under the frame rather than beside it. I think there were pipes that looked similar Dan Gurney maybe or Bill Wirges (not sure Wirges made a CB750 pipe).. they were probably right in the other post about the collecter being changed.

Its a K1 grab it if you can.... and post the numbers if you get it..

The collector is under the frame, not beside. It's an interesting exhaust...

I'll post the numbers after I get it home. Definitely a K1 though...it was 1066xxx.

I'll post up some more pics after I get it home too...I'm not sure I'll have a chance to pick it up for a couple weeks though.

Is the engine seized up on it from sitting so long, seems like it would be.

Surprisingly enough, the engine isn't seized. I went and looked at another cb750 earlier this week that had also been sitting since the 80's, and it too wasn't seized.

I just got back from paying the guy for the bike...can't wait to get it home, I'll post some more pics as soon as it's in the garage here.

It warms my heart to see one go back inside. Even if it ends up pieces it's still better off.

The current owner actually gave me a good deal on it because I promised to not part it out. It'll be back inside very soon hopefully...

In fact, even the vintage 70's paint job on it is still in pretty good shape. Instead of repainting it back to an original color, I think it'll get a good clean up and polish, and be back on the road looking the way it looks now. It'll be more of a "day 2" bike than a resto.
