I hate turning left at a street light.
« on: May 23, 2006, 11:06:57 AM »
Was out and about during lunch today, and had to wait two turns of the damn light before I finally turned right and did a U at the next street (one without a light).  I even have one of those magnet-things strapped to the bottom of my frame and was sitting directly on-top of the stupid sensor.  What do I have to do; strap on a super-magnet???  I don't think my alternator has enough spare juice to power one up.  >:(  >:(  >:(

Some people say that those magnets work, some don't...
I have never spent the cash to buy/try one, but I am curious..

I have to turn left at a light to get to school every day.  After a few weeks of waiting at the light (actually turning left on a red...;)), I called the department of transportation and they sent a guy out to adjust the sensor.  I works great now. :)  Why they don't adjust every light to work with motorcycles, I don't know.

It was on when I bought it.  I didn't know what it was at first, it is a pretty good magnet, but apparently not good enough.  Based on this one's performance, I'm not sure I would waste my money on one though.

I am faced with the same problem.  I make actually make two lefts on my way to town.  I have waited for much too long at times.  Now I just try and time the lights, but sometimes it just isn't possible.  I'll take Dave's advice and call the DOT.  They should get to it in a few years.  In the mean time I'll gas it and go.

you could move to Minnesota. if you're on a bike and the light won't change(or if you feel its taking too long) wait til its clear and go.

I couldn't believe it myself at first, but when I took my motorcycle test, it was one of the questions.

Here is a link to an article. http://starbulletin.com/2005/10/16/news/kokualine.html. I guess we could put a thin steel plate under the bikes if needed. I don't think it is mass, just metal surface area.

Don't have this problem, as my village only has one light  ;D

Oh yeah, and there is a small sign..."$250 fine for turning right on red"
so I usually wait,
but the tourists have paid for this light many times over, espically the ones
in the Porches

I hate them also. I have to use the one by my house (9 miles away) and well it will never trip when I am alone but two up every time trips. if it will not I have to ether run the red or go about 3 miles out of the way to get across were there is not a light. what makes this fun is it is not a free way but the traffic is doing a good 70 to 75 an hour on it as the speed limit is 65
always thought of getting one of them mag thingys but was never shure it was worth it . never heard any one that used on before so now that idea is gone .

Seems like a large piece of metal will do the trick (from what I have read)
Maybe some sort of fabbed up piece between the frame rails, under the motor case.
Add some Heavy Duty magnests to it, and you are a rolling...

Not that I am gonna add extra crap to my bike just to trigger a light, just thinking over here...

ive been trying to find out if there is a specified time you have to wait, cause i get bored at reds as soon as i find out there is no cross traffic....a cop will use it as an excuse to pull you over though, legal or not.
