Wheel froze up
« on: January 18, 2012, 09:40:45 AM »
Tried to leave work yesterday and was drifting sideways. We got a lot of snow here and I should not have applied my parking brake because now my wheel wont turn at all.Thank god I have 4 wheel drive,I was able to drift it side ways into the warehouse today and put a heater on the wheel.Hopefully that will do the trick,or else I will have to take it off,I hope it works. :( :-\By the way its a 03 Ranger 4x4 4.0,anyone else ever have this happen??

Sounds like your caliper has probably seized, or your drums?

Usually the parking brake engages the rear drum. As the shoes wear down some, the leading shoe can "lock up". Typically, I am able to break it free, after disengaging the park lever (or pedal) and backing up. Moving in reverse tends to free up the leading shoe, but you do need SOME traction...

I tried that but had no traction as everything is Ice covered right now.Left rear tire,It will probably thaw and be fine. But I am prepared to remove the drum if I have to.

it can be the E brake cable. It could be frozen or rusted.

Brake cable is fine, first thing I checked. It thawed out,I can actually push the truck and it rolled.Yay.But I am worried that I did something to the transfer case as it is showing 4 low when it isnt even on.We'll see.

Don't want to sound like an #$%* but did you release the parking brake all the way? I've only ever owned Ford pickups (95 Ranger, 96 F-150, and now a 94 Bronco). If the design hasn't changed (floor pedal parking brake), I know I've had a few instances when the parking brake wouldn't release all the way (usually pulling the lever too quickly).

Is it the push-button or dial switch 4WD selector? It may still be engaged and you just need to rock it out. Or, it may be similar to a fault light.
