This was posted by switchum in another tread:

Sorry. I could not help it. There is a cat at the bottom.

I did a bit of backtracking to the source and well, funny thing it had a creative commons licence all he had to do was credit the source and it was free for him to use.

I just want to quote the updates of that story. I would I'd like to give him credit for taking his own site down in compliance but with no response to the author I would doubt his motives.  ;D ;D

UPDATES:

Why did Lamar's site go down after this post went up yesterday? We aren't sure, but something smells fishy.

We need your help! Join our "Shop a SOPA" Copyright Hypocrite Hunt and help us find copyright violations on the other 31 SOPA co-sponsors' websites.

We've contacted the office of Lamar Smith and are waiting on a response.

Oops, guess I shoulda read Bob's link before spouting off, seems DOA?

Remember, violations carry time in Federal Prison. Up to five years.

Want to use that black market Craigslist, or put your ad in the SOPA sanctioned newspaper for a small fee?

It is not DOA, it is just taking a dirt nap.

They will resurrect it soon enough. Lamar Smith says it will be right back in February:

Stop Online Piracy Act Markup to Resume in February

Does this guy have any Internet experience at all Rgconner? With respect to the gentleman, the first thing that will happen is the rest of the world will use DNS servers that are not in US jurisdiction.

Yes, well, it is not that easy.

From wikipedia:

However, the root zone is controlled by the United States Department of Commerce who must approve all changes to the root zone file requested by ICANN. ICANN's bylaws assign authority over the operation of the root nameservers of the Domain Name System to the DNS Root Server System Advisory Committee.

I don't know how else to put it, but the internet runs on trust and the understanding that people will behave themselves, if only for their own good. Because, back to the analogy of giving grenades to the poo slinging monkeys, those same monkeys are now in a small room. One of them slings his grenade, it is a blender on frappe.

One entity, like the US, doing stupid #$%* like this will result in other countries firewalling us off to prevent the chaos of a split/poisoned DNS tree.

You won't be able to use offshore DNS, because the only way for them to not have wikipedia.org removed from the DNS as a measure of SOPA (and yes it is in there) would be to cut themselves off from the root owned and controlled by the US.

And, I assure you, your provider can and will intercept DNS requests and route them to a US based server or send them to /dev/null.

Try to use something like Tor to get around it and I am sure they will stop encrypted packets at the border...

Just a FYI I don't know if any one was using megaupload, but it was taken down, I don't really care either way. But looks like some fresh phishing scams are popping up.

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
The thing with the whole SOPA deal is that one political party is being leaned on by the Hollywood heavies, in exchange for campaign dollars. This isn't a case of government doing what's right, but rather, brown nosing to their financial backers in return for a shot at another term in office.

Piracy has been going on since reel to reel tape recorders were invented, but surprisingly, I haven't seen too many Hollywood stars begging for change at my local railway station? Hmmmnnnnn................ ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Terry you are absolutely right those who support the bill like my senator got campaign money from Hollywood to do this bill.  Currently they are saying the bill is going to get "reworked" to make everyone happy.  This just isn't possible.  The Hollywood people want it 100% their way.

Sing a song copyrighted son on Youtube they get to shutdown Youtube.  Post anything they don't like and they have the power to say it is copyright infringement and they can shut down you site.  This site and many others with user generated content would not exist.

The sad part is it is a very small amount of people who get to decide for the rest of the world what is ok to post and what will get you site yanked from the internet forever.  My gut feeling is they will have a secret vote and pass this garbage bill when we are not looking.  This one is not over, not by a long shot.
