maiden voyage

Hey all. This past Sunday marked the maiden voyage out of our town of just over 100 people for the old cb550 piloted by my wife, who has never been out of second gear on any bike. This was a spur of the moment trip and probably not too smart on our parts considering the unproven bike and a true first time rider (never ridden on the highway ever!), but we ended up having a truly awesome day as both bike and rider performed quite well.

We were out in the street in front of our house running the ol' honda round and round the block as the wife was practicing shifting, turning, breaking, etc. when the group we normally ride with ( 10-12 HD's, 1 suzuki GS1100 and 1 Yamaha ) pulled up. They were heading across the river into Iowa to ride around the Loess Hills. Kim absolutley didn't want to go make a fool of herself in front of all our friends and I was apprehensive about taking the $200.00 Honda out of town, but peer pressure can be a #$%* and before you know it, we were on the phone to leave a message with our insurance agent that we needed insurance on the Honda and then into the wind we went. We fell in behind as we knew Kim would not be running as fast as the others, at least at first, and by the time we caught up with them at the first stop, we were feeling pretty good about both bike and rider. The rest of day just kept getting better and better as we were able to concentrate more on having fun and less on worrying about when disaster would strike.  It was soooooo cool riding my bobber Harley with my wife just in front of me on the flat black Honda. We always had fun riding together on my bike, but it is hard to describe the feeling of seeing your wife riding her own bike that she helped drag home and wrench on to get it to the point where it could actually hit the open roads. What a day! I can't wait until this weekend!  8)

sounds like she's hooked.  I'm in a similar situation, just got my 74 550 running after it had set neglected for 20+ years.  Paid 200 for mine and now have about 800 into it.  I'm 47 and havent riden since I was kid and that was a 90cc dirt bike.  Havent gotten up the nerve to go on a long trip yet.  Keep having intermittent problems with two floats sticking.  Runs good until one sticks and then it pops, sputters, and overflows.  Guess I'll have to take them off and find out why they hang up.  Once thats done I'm off.
Be safe and enjoy.

Hey All,

One tip for the leaking carbs.  It sucks when it happens but one way to minimize spillage is to turn your petcock to"off" if you're leaving the bike for an extended period of time.

At least this way, you should only lose the fuel from the one float bowl that is leaking.

I always do this when parking the bike, just remember to turn it on before leaving for a ride.  It becomes a habit after a while.

My 2 cents.

Yeah, I've started doing that too and turning on the petcock when Istart does become habit.

Way to go ratrod!
