RPM's
« on: May 30, 2006, 04:16:39 AM »
I have a 73 CB 750, and I was wondering what should the RP M's should my bike idle at?
Also being an air cooled engine. what is the safe time to let the bike idle at before it could cause damage?
 ??? ??? ???

I believe the manual says idle should be around 1000-1500 rpm. My bike is happier around 1500-2000 according to my tach (Wich I believe to be inacurate anyway).

As for idle time, if you;re going to let it sit there and idle, it's always a good idea to have a fan blowing on it. I don't think there is any specific time limit that you should not exceed. It all depends on the bike, the weather, and whether or not you're about to herad out on a ride or not (Giving it a couple of minutes to warm up before you hit the road or what not.)
Not much of an answer, but I hope it helps a little bit.

My K0 does a solid, but "lumpy" idle just under 1,000, but who knows what the true RPM's are. Hope to put an accurate tach to her on the next tuneup.

I seen on a Discovery channel motorcycle show that all Harley's are designed to pass a bunch of durability tests and one being that they have to be able to idle in a hot no airflow environment ( like a desert) for something like 24 hours.  Thats amazing to me but I still don't like them.

I don't like them either...I think that TV show was on the V Rod...that's a Harley in name only...do you honestly think a big old air cooled bagger could idle for 24 hrs? They can't even hold thir fluids!
I see the ads now.."Depends for bikes! And those who love them!"
