Advice for fork boot removal
« on: January 21, 2012, 11:39:34 AM »
Looking for some tips on how to remove the fork boots off my 76 550 without tearing them up.  They still have plenty of flex to them, but I'm worried about tearing them by trying to pry them off.  Thanks.

I have never had an issue with tearing them at all. They are a pretty heavy material. Of course it depends on how the bike was stored. I suppose it they are really sun baked they could be brittle, but in that case you would want to replace them. You could use a hair dryer to soften them up if you think it will help. I use a small screwdriver on my 750's to get the lower lip up from the fork leg and then just work it around.

they go on easy, its when theyve been stuck there for years that they might be hard to remove, little liquid soap on the lip and groove helps.

As Johnie pointed out use a heat gun to make them more pliable and some lube of some type to take them off and on with an appropriate tool..
