A brand new SOHC in the Honda line.

This might catch on well.  I'm not too keen on the transmission though.  They should offer an antique foot shift option.

The article is confusing....they make it sound like there is a manual trans/six speed available?

Quote
Honda hopes DCT will attract new riders who may be intimidated by the standard bike’s manual clutch and six-speed gearbox.

Expected in dealerships this summer, the standard NC700X is priced at $6999, while MSRP for the DCT/Combined Anti-lock Braking System bike has not been set

Some interesting design & features.  At least they have the guts to try something different, kinda, & also bring it to NA.  Wasn't there some other (NT700?) that looked like a small ST with the bags permanently mounted a'la PC800 of years ago?  Saw one at a dealer here last year, think he brought it up from the US.  Wanted a crazy price, like 10G, this one is 7G, anybody know what that NT went for, was it a flop?

 I am reffering to the naked stripped pic of the bike;
I think the neck should be brought out about 5 inches, raked about 5 degrees, conventional gas tank, rider seat above rear of motor... would be a very nice ride........
 oh yeah footpegs moved forward...

I'm enjoying that the manufacturers are finally bringing more adventure tourer bikes to the US. EU, CAN, and AUS always seems to get the good bikes. I still think the Yamaha MT-01 would do great here.

Don't understand why they went with the SOHC? Figure you could get a little more performance with a DOHC. Kinda setting themselves behind the pack.

I enjoy the NC700X design with the underseat tank. Same as the Beemer's F650. Seems like it would make balancing easier on the dirt and trail. Really not too keen on the auto tranny or even electric shifter.

It's always hard for the manufacturers to please a crowd. I kinda like the bike. I'd do away with those panniers and replace them with some harder ones like Caribou/Pelicans just in case I bite it.

I love my V-Strom and I'll ride it into the ground. Once it comes time to replace it, I'll probably settle for the Supere Tenere unless Honda brings over the Varadero XL1000V (so I can maintain my allegiance to Honda  ;D)

"Adventure bike"??   Every bike I've ever owned has been an adventure bike.... ::)

Does it fly?

The adventure tourers are a category of bike which is street capable - of course- with mediocre dirt capabilites. Usually an extended travel suspension over a street bike but not quite as much as a dirt bike. A higher ground clearance and more upright sitting style. Think of it as the next tier in dual sport bikes. However, I really wouldn't want to tour on an actual dual sport unless it's the TAT or CDT. I had a KLX400 and just riding it on the pavement for 30 miles killed me but I could ride all day on the trail. The adv. tourer bikes sorta fit the niche of a "does-all" bike.

I cherish my CB enough to not ride in dirt (although, I've talked to a few guys from the 70's who claimed they did take their CB's everywhere, to include mudding and trail riding). My CB is my princess and is only meant for the pavement. You do what you want to do with your bike. Plus, I won't bat an eye if I drop the Strom but I'll have a mental breakdown if I drop the CB.

I guess that I'm getting old, but maybe I can hang on long enough that bikes will come back to the time when motorcycles were designed for adventure whether they were "cruisers, commuters, sport, or racers, dirt, etc. " as witness quickly detachable rear wheel and other advances that allowed you to ride it to work during the week, stick knobs on it on the weekend and go fire roading up Azuza canyon or running logging roads on Van Island to scare the Bears and your self or to change tires pull the lights tune it up and do some "scratching" on old airports, and the maybe decide that next weekend that you were going 500-600 miles for a coffee/beer with an old airforce buddy, I guess this is what happens when you let publicists into "motorcycling" and poseur's to think that they are god's gift to bike culture because the leather tassels on their hand grips are designed by some howler
in Milwaukee, London or Milan. "Adventure Bike". Indeed.
Grumble, Grumble.

I recognize the ranting of a crazy old man I think you should take your pills and calm down. ;D ;D ;D
But seriously, I agree with you because I believe the the only adventure built into a bike is the one that is installed on the top of the seat that connects the foot pegs with the handlebars.  I have numerous motorcycles all built for a different purpose.  I do have the most fun on one that can do it all but its not the bike that is doing it.  It's me.  IF I was crazy enough to take my F3 off road, I'm sure it would be fun.

Well put Demon..
I grew up in an era of your bike does everything you want to try.... if it didnt do it well..you didnt try that anymore..

those days they did not have as many types of bikes like now..
Seems like nowadays there are more moneyed types that have a few different bikes  for different "moods of riding" I guess I should point this out to the newbike crowd, when they call my bikes old..  I will tell them my bike fits many roles, and I dont have to switch bike just to go on a 2 week ride.

Wasn't the Africa Twin a little bloated compared to the original Transalp?

Maybe but it can cruise easier at highway speeds and is pretty rugged off-road. For the adventure traveller going around the world it would be preferred over the Transalp.

I just wish the Jap manufacturers would sell their euro models here. So many excellent looking bikes overseas that the selection here makes me ill.
Looking at the specs, I haven't found the torque #s yet but HP numbers are nothing special. forty seven, yes 47 hp is what this thing makes. Of course it will handle better and be a bit better on gas but I don't know. When I get a new bike, I would like it to have more than my 30+ year old CB. Of course that is just me. Something like the Ninja 650R or Yamaha F1,6,or 8.
Personally, I would like to sit my can on a honda 919.

Agreed!

Yamaha MT-01. The new Buell.

Yamaha XT660X (pictured in AUS  ;D)

All of Honda's adventure line-up: the Varadero, Crosstourer, Crossrunner, and Transalp.

I need diversity! Cruisers and crotch rockets over rated. Albeit, I can't buy all of these but at least I can go down to the dealership and drool all over them in person. I've already drolled all over the Super Tenere (thanks Yamaha!)
