Dropped my '73 CB500 oil pan and...
« on: May 25, 2006, 03:42:53 PM »
...didn't see much of concern...no sludge, no chips, no filings...a little bit of leftover gas/oil mixture...not too much of anything...

But the pan did drop down without any prodding...I was expecting to have to whack it with a mallet after 33 years...but when I loosened the last bolt, it fell right off...

...And so did the oil pickup funnel...is that *supposed* to be a 'floating' pickup??? No o-ring to hold it in place, and it has obviousyt been vibrating/rubbing on the pan...I can see the marks...

Other than that, it all looks good...nice smooth gears, Hi-Vo chain looks OK, nice and clean...

New o-ring & filter and back together! This thing may actually run!...by November...

Well, the manual doesn't say anything about o-rings, or clips, or whether it's floating or not...just says to "Mount the screen filter on the lower crankcase"...(pg 39)...it keeps falling off, so I guess it's a real loose fit...held up/on by the oil pan...well, that's OK...it lasted for 5731 miles/33 years, I suppose it'll hold on another couple years...   ;D
