Tell me abut these SOHC's
« on: January 23, 2012, 10:48:18 AM »
I have an "Inspiration" folder and I saved these pics a while back. Don't remember where I found them or who built them.
I recently swapped a 550 engine into my CB500 and had a good spare, so....what to do? Get on Craigslist and find a titled frame! I have enough stuff in my stash to build about 80-85% of a complete bike. I was thinking about doing something along these lines. Maybe not as flashy, but I love the overall theme.

I can tell the front ends are raked. Care to guess about how much? Are the forks stock length?

It looks like the tanks have been narrowed. Who knows anything about narrowing a tank.

Not sure about the struts...I think hardtails are illegal in Japan. How would a bike like this ride? Maybe short shocks instead?

They have been a topic here before.  Nice looking bike but look like they will make you sore.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

At around 44 seconds, you can hear a guy say what sounds like "That's the baddest bike here."  Naturally I assume he has to be referring to Yoshi's CB750.  ;D

I can enjoy the effort put into it. And I'd even say the art. But as a motorcycle "how does it ride"? In the words of Charles Barkley: "turrible".

OK for straightracing, though the front wheel is too big for that. And Thursday night congregations at the Dairy Queen.

But what kind of riding do you want to do? Any bike that i would actually own, would have to take me 55 miles down the road to Highway 135, then another 125 miles thru the countryside, some questionable pavement, some tricky corners. Then home again, all without a backache. These will never do that.

So what kind of riding do you want to do?. Mileage on these is counted in the hundreds per year. I prefer thousands, with at least the potential for tens of thousands of miles.

I have a CB500 that's set up as a "Super Sport" and a CB550 that will be built with Euro bars and set up for long distance cruising, as well as a stock XS650.

If I build something like this, it will be for fun and bar-hopping on bike nights.

I know guys who ride hardtails all day long, just like me with suspension, and only complain a little about sore ass' and backs, if they were built with decent amount of ground clearance they handle just fine, as long as there are no bumps, I've ridden my buddie's hardtail Ironhead Sportster and it's no big deal with 15psi in the back tire, until you hit a BIG bump... :o :'(

My 836 was set up similar to that , except it had a 2inch thick foam seat, and Superbike bars..

first long ride in over a decade and I did  around 600 miles in a day..almost 800 in 27 hrs..  So |I woukld say it can be rideable. I went Kelowna BC to Shoshone IDAHO  from 5pm here to sundown next day.

300 miles would be a piece of cake.. I love that style of bike..launches hard too..

While it may take the jar out of a hardtail, 15psi in the rear just can't handle properly.  That would squirm all over the place plus increase tire wear dramatically.

If this were a primary bike (an everyday rider), I'd say probably not.  But serving as a backup bike to a backup bike to a backup bike, I don't see why not.  Not everything has to be built with practicality in mind... especially when it comes to bar hopping and bike nights.  It sounds like you have a few practical bikes already.  Have fun with this one!   ;)

obviously, this is no corner carving set-up, sqirm is not a problem when the bike does not have enough ground clearance to lean very far, surprisingly, I've not noticed these guys to go through a lot of tires in the three or so years I've been riding with them...and to be honest, I don't know exactly what tire pressure they run, just that it is quite low compared to what works on a normally suspended bike
If it works good, it looks good...

Just wondering... are you trying to take a humorous jab at Yoshinobu Kosaka parking one of his creations at a Venice bike show?  If you don't like the bike (or even the builder) that's fine, but I really don't understand your need to throw such a petty insult at him (comparing him to a strutting peacock looking for a mate or other peacocks) and his creation on this forum.  From what I've seen of this guy, he is nothing but humble and nice.

Chiropractors dream. ;D  I think more of my spine and long term health to ever subject myself to something like that.  At least if you have a sprung seat you have something.  Always thought hardtails without sprung seats were one of the dumber ideas in the motorcycle world.

OK, so how about a "similar" style/build and maybe use short shocks or lowering blocks?

What's your take on raking the front a little?

 Again.......just as a boulevard cruiser.

I think lowering (using short shocks) and raking would look pretty cool.  Go for it if that's your vision!

I am not trying slam anyone on here, but really hoW many that answered here have EVER ridden a rigid or Strutted Bike more than a Day?? Speak up if you have, if you have not we will take your "Advice " with a grain of salt...

I built my first rigid bike, a 350 twin, a while ago probably 74 or 75... and been around custom bikes, lets say quite a bit of the time since the late 80s..

Different bikes for different likes... myself I am not rushing out to build a cafe.. but not trying to talk folks out of them either...

Years ago I rode one that belonged to a friend of a friend and it was on a concrete highway where the slabs go bump bump bump every 20 feet.  It was awful and no way would I even consider spending a whole day on it. Maybe on a nice new smooth asphalt road but around here in the spring, with the potholes, you'd blow a nut. ;D

I forgot one thing on mine stock footpeg position.. allows me to lift off the seat slightly when I rode over cracks, joints etc. With rearsets as shown and the low bars its gonna be tougher. Certainly can build that style and still put hours/miles on them.. most people thought I wouldnt make it to Bonneville on mine, but I did...

Thats a pretty crappy answer Frank, especially since the guy asked

Quote
. How would a bike like this ride?

I would assume that he would like both sides of the story mate, and it doesn't take much to realize that a bike with no rear suspension and low tire pressure is going to handle nothing like a bike with suspension, so i think a "grain of salt" isn't correct at all and very one eyed. The bottom line is it will handle like crap and be a bar hopper to be ridden on fairly good roads, a chopper frame usually has more flex than a strutted Honda frame and has more give, so a chopper would ride better. Putting shorty shocks to make the bike that low would have the tire hitting the rear guard a lot, so i would probably avoid that route as well. If you want to build it for looks and know the pitfalls then go right ahead, it won't be an every day rider, but i will look good..... ;D :P

If that's what a person likes, and really really wants to ride, then sure you can ride it along distance, a few times in one's lifetime, and have good feelings and recollections about the rides. I've ridden one a few miles, the shop i worked at in Tucson made both the strutters and hardtails and that's all I needed to tell me the weak points. I don't think an extended ride would have changed my conclusion. In fact, I don't think a ride at all is necessary for one to determine that a hardtail would be uncomfortable to ride. I was not sufficiently taken by the style to override the hardships one endures to ride one.

But if you want to get out and do 700 to 1000+ miles rides, 4 or 5 times a year, year after year, that style bike can only be objectively classified as uncomfortable. The lack of suspension in the rear can actuially be dangerous. The rake in the front virtually eliminateds the possibillity of close quarter maneuvering.

This is not to denigrate the straightracer (I love that stuff) and the once a weeknight bar hopper, or parking lot frequenter. That is all legitimate parts of the sport. The OP asked.
